Shute harbour is a commercial harbour with the most fantatsic views reminiscent of the Caribbean (BVI?). There is a logistics terminal and not much else other than a ferry point for island trips (e.g. Palm Bay) or boat pick up (Sun Sails). There are nature...More

Visited on Friday 21st September and disappointed to see it still devastated after the cyclone. Hopefully it will be repaired and used again soon.

Nice walk through the rainforest for about 20mins each way with kids. Experience a little waterfall, a few little green tree snakes basking in the sun. Watch out for a few stinger plants on the way. Lovely view from the beach with heaps of coral...More

Fortunately this Harbour has not changed much in 35 years a few more houses surround and a better carpark but that's about it. Apparently the Marina washed away during Cyclone Debbie and along with a number of houses and holiday accomodation have not been repaired....More

Much of the Shute Harbour infrastructure has been destroyed by Cyclone Debbie in 2017. It is no longer the centre of tourist cruises into the Whitsundays. Some heavy duty boating seems to use the harbour now. The big winner seems to be that all cruises...More

I was a little taken back at the damage the ladt cyclone unleashed, everything was gone, no pontoons, no shops, no wharf, all gone. It was still nice to visit, maybe one day it will be returned to its former glory.

A beautiful place but still undergoing works from cyclone Debbie in 2017. Parking is a bit of a hassle at the moment with all the tradesmen cars at the moment so we struggled with that for the boat we caught from there. Lovely views and...More

We saw boats that are moored in small clumps here and there. Last year a cyclone destroyed the marina and there are no plans for now to repair it. Still there are boats that are moored here, but not as many as last year. I...More

There is not a whole lot to do actually. Have a coffee or go for a walk on the beach board walk which follows the beach line. There are lots of little Cafes on the walk. Enjoy😀

Car or Campervan for Cairns to Brisbane via Hamilton island? (4 Replies)
My fiancée and I are honeymooning in Queensland in August. I have booked us in for four nights at a hotel in Port Douglas 22nd to 26th of August and A hotel in Hamilton Island 28th of August to 1st of September. Basically we want to leave Cairns on the 26th of August and travel by road aiming to be in Airlie Beach area for the 28th of August, park up for four nights at the secure car park in Shute Harbour for four nights while we are staying in Hamilton Island. Then we plan to hit the road...More

I keep hearing bad reports about campervans being an expensive way to go. Also August is a very busy month here so you would find caravan parks and campgrounds very crowded. I would suggest hiring a car which would give you much more flexibility to find budget accommodation and would, I image, be a cheaper option in the end. Hopefully others with more experience of campervans will be able to give you more advice.

Brampton Island is also closed. There are plans to redevelop it but nothing certain at this stage. The boat no longer goes there from Mackay. Cruise Whitsundays have regular ferries to Daydream and Hamilton only. Other islands can be visited as part of a day trip. Alternatively you may find a water taxi at Shute Harbour which could take you where you want to go.

Shute Harbour- Getting to Whitsundays (2 Replies)
Hi there, I am trying to arrange transfers to get to Shute Harbour from Airlie, and I was wondering if there is a cafe or restaurant at Shute harbour that we can wait at whilst waiting to be picked up and transferred to airport? I think we will need to wait around that area for 2 hours. Appreciate any info, Thanks

You can catch the local bus. There was a cafe at Shute Harbour last time I was there but that was before Cyclone Debbie and I know there was extensive damage to the jetty so not sure whether it is open now. Why do you need to go to Shute Harbour for transfer to the airport? Which airport are you talking about? If Hamilton Island, then you can catch the ferry from Airlie Beach. If Proserpine, then you can catch the bus from Airlie Beach.
