Fort Roupell was built in 1914 and became part of the Metaxas line in the 1930s and used for defence against the Germans in 1941 and is great to visit. I f you give them a call before you go they will arrange an English speaking guide from the Greek army for you. It is well worth the visit and very informative. Makes you wonder how very resilient the Greeks are and very brave as well. One word Brilliant. It is free to visit an the tour guides are army personnel who are not allowed to accept money but I did slip 50euro to him to share with his mates for a drink on us.

Despite the biting wind we really enjoyed our visit to Rupel fort. The young Greek soldier assigned to our English speaking party was excellent even when the wind literally took his breath away. He gave us all the information about the fort and the last battle and showed us the very interesting underground tunnels that make up the fort. The views were spectacular and the road up to the fort excellent. Would definitely visit again

It is a Greek fortress built in 1914 and it contributed to stop the German-Bulgarian invasion of Greece that took place in 1941. It has been included in the 1930’s –the Metaxas Line, the Greek line of defense.

It is a MUST visit especially for us Greeks. We had a very informative tour with the help and guidance of linesmen and it is a spot not to be miss by anyone….especially if you are close by.

There was none in the group who was not moved!

It was a great experience because it offers an opportunity to see how our ancestors fought for freedom and what they had to go through. It was a little bit exhausting because of the walking but the tour guide made the experience really pleasant, he was very informative and had an answer to every question!

P.S the place is not wheelchair accessible and if you're claustrophobic avoid going into the catacombs

Amazing history museum where you can see and learn the original Greek fort from the II world war. We were lucky to meet Greek soldiers who showed us the place so we didn’t have to wait for the group.

Hospitable soldiers offer an excellent and touching tour of Fort Roupel.
Diving into history, watching the pictures of the soldiers that fought there, one feels as it was only yesterday those heroic battles took place..... You will feel like memories come to life as if they were your own.
Totally recommend it, even for non history enthousiasts!

We went here as a couple and there were 4 tour buses already there, the soldiers gave a great presentation of the importance of this site and the whole Metaxa fortification. Even though there were many people, it didn't feel crowded or hurried. The underground fortification is fascinating, I only wish we could see more of it.
