About
This Masia is situated in an excellent location for discovering the region and all its historical and cultural sites, its villages, cities and beaches. The village of Vilajuïga is a five minute walk from the gite and has a small Spar, a bar and restaurant, a butcher and other commerce for immediate needs. It is within easy reach of the Dali triangle, the magnificent city of Girona, the medieval village of Castelló d'Empúries, the nature reserve of Aiguamolls Emporda and the Roman and Greek ruins of Empuries. The Creus cape head and the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is a ten minute drive away. The La Garrotxa volcanic region of Catalunya, the commercial city of Figueres and the popular beach town of Roses are all within a short driving distance. And the list goes on and on. There are boundless things to see and do in the area.

Mas Gelamà vineyards and winehouse, with its rural gite/villa is an extraordinarily beautiful and comfortable place to stay for self-catering. We spent two nights with family and friends the 29th and 30th May, 2014.

Mas Gelamà burgeons with authentic character and charm. It is beautifully and well furnished and it is equipped with everything needed to make one’s stay comfortable. It has three spacious, double bedrooms, two full en suite baths and another full bath at the entry of the third bedroom. The beds are comfortable (but might be “just” if you’re over 6’2”) and the towelling and linens are spotless. Although not of the absolute highest quality, and as they are provided complimentarily, I will not judge the sheets too harshly because we normally have to pay for them in rural gites in France. And, housekeeping at the end of the stay is included in the price as well, which is a bonus. The communal rooms are of generous proportions and there are two terraces for al fresco dining. There is a large stone barbecue in the garden and we were provided with vine wood for cooking. Ample free parking, free wifi and spotless accommodations top off the extras.

Third generation (I believe) vintner, Señor Roger Rius Pedret, lives on premise and was there to greet us with a very warm welcome. His gracious hospitality, availability and assistance with all aspects of our stay contributed immeasurably to our experience. No question or request went unanswered.

The villa is situated in an excellent location for discovering the region and all its historical and cultural sites, its villages, cities and beaches. The village of Vilajuïga is a five minute walk from the gite and has a small Spar, a bar and restaurant, a butcher and other commerce for immediate needs. It also has a tourist office. So, Mas Gelamà is a perfect base for discovering the region.

One of the highlights of our stay, however, was a very intimate, hour and a half walking tour of the vineyards of Gelamà, soaking in the exceptional, panoramic views and listening to Roger’s accompanying explanation of the history of the Gelamà vineyards and of all things related to oenology. And, of course, the wine tasting afterward was a delicious treat and end to a magical afternoon. Whilst we dashed away to catch views of the setting sun from the nearby mountains (at Roger’s suggestion), Roger set up our wine tasting / aperitif in the garden next to the barbecue where we were preparing our dinner. The care and passion that Roger has for his chemical-free vineyards are reflected in the quality of his wines. We bought his red and white wines to bring home and they were just as good out of the holiday glow as they were on holiday.

There are three final points I have to make that might concern certain people. However, none of these points detracted or disturbed whatsoever any of us during our stay. We all concurred that we could whole-heartedly recommend Mas Gelamà to people looking for an authentic experience in rural Catalunya.

Firstly, the villa is not at ground level, so there are rather steep stairs to access it. Secondly, there is a lovely, clean, gentle dog that lives at Mas Gelamà, and she does come by to visit from time to time. And finally, and rather more importantly, there are trains that run directly beside the gite/villa. They are not visible and they are very brief/short. And they do not run through the night. However, they could bother those who go to bed early or those who are late risers.

There you have it. We felt we got incredibly good value for our money and memories that will last a lifetime.

Only through the super helpful staff at Girona Tourist Office did we come across this beautiful vineyard. We were staying in Girona for 5 days and wanted to visit a vineyard but we did not have a car. 'Cavas Gelama' is situated about 6 stops from Girona train station. Trains leave at least once every hour during the day taking about 30mins (€9rtn). Gelama vineyard is then only a 5min walk from the station. On arrival we were greeted by Roger the owner who introduced us to the long family history of the vineyard and how he has brought it back to life. The tour then involved tasting his wines, enjoying some snacks and then visiting some of the vines right next to us. This was followed by viewing the cellars and a sneak preview of the first Cava created by his family in generations, due to be launched in 9 months time. Roger is a great host and the tour was excellent value for €6 euros. This is a small family run business with currently 4wines, they also provided accommodation. Best to book in advance.

Visited Gelama in May 2014 with some friends. Roger was a fantastic host and the house was beautiful. His wine is exceptional and his vineyard is natural - he hand weeds the vineyard and doesn't use chemicals. Loved the white wine the best. We BBQ'd chicken and sausages over grapevine charcoal - it was the best meal I had in Spain! There are 3 bedrooms and all the beds are comfortable. Each bedroom has a private bathroom. I would highly recommend a stay at Gelama. You can get there via train from Barcelona and walk to the property.

I stayed here in May 2014 for 2 nights as a single with 2 couples, all 3 bedrooms are comfortable, with a well equipped kitchen. Our host Roger welcomed us warmly and had a lot of information to give us about the locale and surroundings and places to visit. He showed us around the outdoors, invited us to gather eggs the next morning from his chickens for breakfast. We had a delightful tour of his vineyard with a tasting afterwards. Late in the afternoon after the tour Roger insisted we get in the car and drive up in the mountaIns to see the sunset and the ruins, which were spectacular.
While we were doing this he went to the local butcher, picked up our sausages and chickens for is to BBQ for dinner. Upon our return he had already lit the BBQ for us and left. What a host, it was a stay not to be forgotten, such hospitality! Definitely recommend for anyone!!!

We had an amazing tour in the wine company Gelamà, we visited the cellar which has a great history and we had a personal and very nice wine tasting of the local wines with some typical Catalan food. We would recommend this bodega Gelamà for people who are looking for hospitality, great wines and a personal tour from the winemaker himself!!!

There is something mystic about this place ...as it draws you back to history. I hear that the winery will be revamped to a boutique hotel cum spa and I look forward to visit them again. Cheers'

This vineyard is immersed with History. Been with the family for nearly 5 generations. Been through the Spanish Civil war when it had to be abandoned. Now resurrected by Roger. It's growing with his enthusiasm. Nice comfortable rooms with very good breakfast. The wine tour is very interesting. However I think that they are under charging. It's worth more than the €70 we paid for a night.

We were on a coach tour staying in Roses and this was one of our places to visit and everyone thought it was our best day out. My wife trod some grapes to show how wine was first made. A fascinating family history and how Roger is trying to rebuild his families history of wine making. The wine tasting was excellent and disappointing when we learnt he didn't export to England, not yet anyway. He showed us his for hire villa and it's lovely. Sleeps eight and has access to the old animal barn underneath from the living room. Would thoroughly recommend this place as well worth a visit.

This is a great hidden gem that makes excellent, unique wines. We just sent an email in the morning and they were very accommodating and had us come over that afternoon. The bodega has been in the family for centuries, but has just been operational for 12 years after a new generation has studied winemaking and reopened it after it was damaged after the Spanish Civil war. For 10 euros we spent an hour walking in the vines, exploring the cellars, tasting 4 or 5 wines right out of the barrel and another 4 in a more formal tasting out of the bottle. There were only three of us, so you get lots of personal attention and can ask anything. There are some really unique organic wines made in giant Grecian ceramic containers and a lot of great stories about the history of the region and information about how to make sparkling wine. It's an easy 15 minute drive from downtown Figueres, but you really feel like you are in the middle of the countryside with great views of the Pyrenees. It was definitely the highlight of our trip, don't miss it!
