About
A sunken natural park, originally a meeting place of the Pangerang Aboriginal Tribe. The name Merriwa mean the rich flat ground at the bend of a river. The park features gardens below street level, large grassy expanses, majestic gum trees, fernery, pond, playground equipment, barbecues and toilets. An oasis in the middle of vibrant city centre.

Always been a good time

Merriwa Park is the best park in Wangaratta bar none. There are good times to be had for all ages. I remember having such a fun time here with family as a kid. Then an even better time as a teenager with friends. Still, today the park is as enjoyable as it has ever been. Lots to explore and spots to relax, would recommend.

Returning to reminisce
Oct 2020
I lived in Wangaratta years ago and I used to enjoy coming to this park to see the various community events that took place here. There was a time where the park had art sculptures everywhere.

But when I visited this week... it was simply to take a walk through the fernery...to have break from the driving. It's so beautiful under the established trees... there were children running around and families enjoying time outside.

This is a wee bit difficult to turn into from the main road, but once you drive down the small hill, there is plenty of car parking. There are toilets on site ... as well as plenty of picnic tables and grassy areas to enjoy.

Beautiful park

A beautiful sunken park. The grounds were immaculately maintained with paths, play equipment, toilets, tables and chairs, There is a little water features ferny area that you can walk through. At the top of the park is a bike hub with hot showers and toilets, bike repair stand with tools, pump etc. Such a great area. Every evening I walked through here there were family and groups of people just enjoying themselves, it was so good to see.

Good to find a shower.

Thank you Wangaratta! Free hot shower, water taps to fill van tank, beautiful park. Pity more towns didn’t do this. Only improvements would be hooks or another seat in the bathroom to put clothes, towel etc without them getting wet. Or a screen in front of the shower. Overall good facility.

Beautiful Park

A sunken park near the river and a great place to relax or have a picnic. The gardens are lovely and there are some majestic trees. Not far away from the shopping centre but a real oasis.

Very nice park

I went to Wangaratta for the Jazz Festival, and also went to the Sunday market, Blues marquee and general marquee. There was food and wine for sale in the park providing a great atmosphere. It would have been good to have more chairs and tables available, as they were all taken by people having their lunch or a drink.

Wangaratta Jazz Festival 2017
Nov 2017 • Couples
We had yet another great time at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. This time the Blues tent was situated in Merriwa Park and the atmosphere was as good as previous years. The supporting food and beverage options were about the same, My only reservation is that the parking was some what limited in comparison to previous years. This park is a lovely spot for general walks, bbq's and general recreation as it has plenty of grass and lovely trees.. .pleasant ambiance.

An oasis right next to the bustling city.

Well not quite like Melbourne or Sydney but wangaratta is a regional centre so there is a lot of activity in the cbd.
On the edge of the town centre down a very steep embankment is a well cared for park with so much to do.
The lawn tennis club hosts regular games, there are people doing tai chi under the gums and there are areas of lawn for the children to play.
At one end, near the town entrance is a small creek with its resident flock of ducks. The opposite side of the park has a sound stage for musical and theatrical events. It has its own moat, I suspect to keep unhappy audiences out.
A very pleasant place to stop for a while to recharge.

beautiful
Jan 2018 • Friends
Good place to relax and take in the serenity and beauty of well appointed parklands, There are barbecues available for use for those wishing to just kick back and enjoy the beauty of nature. Ample room for the kids to run around and there are also public toilets available for when nature calls. It should be on every tourists must visit list. You will not be disappointed.
