Booked to travel from Riu palace to cocoa beach , prompt driver., pick up was as indicated with time and place. The price per person was 15$ US round trip. A bit pricey although the vehicles are clean and new.

We had a great experience, we were taken to a beautiful waterfall and volcanic spa. We stopped everywhere we wanted to from a grocery store to McDonald’s in Liberia. Our guide William was very pleasant, kind and knowledgeable. A delight to be around and I would recommend him to a friend :) thanks

We travelled to the RIU Guanacosta, Costa Rica with 2 other couples for a week of relaxation and fun with friends April 5-12, 2014. We hired LAR Transport for an excursion day. LAR Transport was the company that our travel agent negotiated for us to/from the airport. Marco was our driver from the airport to the resort. Marco was very pleasant and allowed us to stop on the way from the airport to pick up cold drinks for the ride...Marco has a good sense of humour and spoke english quite well. LAR Transport had a kiosk at the resort. The concierge, David, helped us book a driver/bus for a full day of siteseeing. We were anxious to see parts of Costa Rica. On our way to the first stop, in a remote area, 2 men with guns came out of the brush and made it evident that we were to stop. Our driver, Carlos Reyes, rather than stopping drove right through even though the bus was shot at. The bus was hit in 2 places. We were all quite shaken up by the unfortunate incident but feel we need to share our experience for a couple of reasons. LAR Transport treated us very well. They were as shocked by the incident as we were. Apparently, this is the first time the type of incident has happened in Guanacosta. We hope this was an isolated incident and does not continue to happen in the future. We were told that 2 nights later 4 men from Nicaragua were arrested and are in jail now.
Back for the reason for sharing this info:
1. When they tell you not to take valuables or a lot of cash on tours - DON'T! We were surprised that the value of personal items and cash we had with us.
2. LAR Transport, the owner (don't remember his name), Carlos Reyes, and the concierge back at the resort, David, treated us very well. The owner came out to the place where Carlos stopped the bus and was part of our police escort back to the resort. Unfortunately we had to return the same way we arrived. The LAR team were very professional and compassionate. We received a full refund, did not have to pay for our transfer back to the airport. We were also offered a driver and bus at our disposal for the remainder of our stay in Costa Rica. All of this offered without being asked. Of course, we didn't take them up on future tours as we decided to stay on the resort for the rest of the week but appreciated the offer very much. David and Carlos kept us up to date throughout the balance of the week on the police reporting of these bandits and their arrest.

P.S. Our Signature Vacations representative was also available to assist us with any of our requests.

The day before our flight we spoke with the LAR representative at Riu Palace who told us the Airport shuttle would be $15 per person if at least four people were utilizing the service and if not, it would be 60 for the two of us to book the shuttle privately. He also told us to book the shuttle at least 10 minutes before 9 AM the next day as by then he would know if there were at least 4 people taking shuttle or if we would have book the shuttle privately. As such, we followed his instructions the next morning but a different guy changed the price from 60 to 75 and denied there being a 9 AM shuttle at all. It felt, smelled and tasted like a scam.

David, Anthony and Rodney saved our vacation. We were at the Riu in Guanacaste and initially, it was beautiful, however after 2 days, we were stir crazy. The resort is set in the middle of the forestry so if you want to walk around and meet the locals, forget it, totally land locked. Since the trip was arranged with Apple, I initially contacted their rep- their excursions average about 1-400 dollars per excursion which was crazy, considering the colones which is Costa Rica money was 511:1. I could not understand the price point. Several friends told us to got to the beach and check out the vendors there, to no avail, their price was about 300.00 (US) for what I wanted to do.

I wanted to see Costa Rica, not the touristy side but the real Costa Rica. One of my Travel mates suggest Lar Transportation. I met David and he was such a great help. I asked to see the REAL Costa Rica. David knowledge and my ingenuity we came up with the Karen tour, which consisted of going to Guatile to see Costa Rica pottery made by artisans. Then we went to Santa Cruz where the black Jesus hangs, then a lovely colony comprising of just women, who cooked amazing food and then to the beach...the cost of this for 5 people came out to about $28.00 per person. We called this the Karen tour and after I told several people, they have 5 more groups on the Karen Tour.

Ok, let me tell of our tour guide Rodney, who was AMAZING. Rodney is from CR but had a 10 year lay over in New Jersey. He spoke of his love for his country, we spoke about the great beauty that his country has to offer. Did you know it was illegal to cut down a tree in Costa Rica. They consider the forest to be priceless and school children plan thousands of trees each year. To see Costa Rica through his eyes was amazing and fun as well. He showed us many interesting foods and places the locals go, we had such a great time, we book another excursion later on.

As for the hotel, if you are go to Costa Rica and want to see the country, DONT stay in a resort, aim for a private residence or a local hotel. The resorts are mostly landlocked and there is no taxi service, so you will need an excursion to off of the property. For me, that was a bummer. I was able to see the country and come away with a better perspective. As for the Rui, there is the Palace and the Guanacaste, STAY AT THE PALACE. TRUST me, better food, better accommodations. The Rui Guanacaste does not have room service, internet is 40 dollars for three days and the drinks were watered down. The Palace has free Wi-Fi, room service and a better food set up. Also at the Guanacaste, every 2-3 days about 25 kids were given day passes to swim which increase the noise volume.

We stayed at the RIU Guanacaste and there was a desk for Lar at the entrance. There were staff members there all day every day. David and Alfonso were particularly helpful.

The driver that really made our day was named Carlos Reyes. He took us to a rainforest for a hike, mud bath, hot springs, etc. What really impressed me was that when my Mom fell behind the rest of the group he stayed with her, carried her bag, made sure she was safe, and enjoying herself. We rented the van for eight hours and he stayed with us for the whole eight hours. It was nice and very comforting to have a local with us to tell us about the towns that we were driving through and to chat with us. Thank you so much Carlos for looking out for my Mom!! I really appreciate that!! You made it a great day for us!!

We hired a Lar van/driver for a full day while at the Riu Guanacaste last week. Rodney was our driver, and he was the best! He took our family to the Rincon de Le Vieja National Park for a 6 1/2 hour hiking trip, & even hiked part of the way with us! He also took us to a good shopping location, and also to a place to buy the best coffee beans. He was so accommodating, knowledgeable, professional, helpful, kind, and an all-around great guy! He even pulled off the road to show us a cashew apple. It was money well spent, and Rodney really made our family vacation extra special. Our family highly recommends Lar Transport and Rodney.

the trips organised by Tui are sometimes quite impersonal and are governed by there pick up and drop off times... i found with LARS you could organise your own suitable pick up and return times depending on distance. you could also stop whenever you wanted to take in local sights. the drivers are very experienced and speak quite good english and are always keen to show tourists / visitors the best parts of costa rica. they are friendly and reliable and again i would not hesitate to reccomend there services to anyone. they are based in the Riu Palace and also the RIU Guanacaste inside reception at the Guanacaste and just outside the main reception doors at the RIU Palace. they are a very good company and the owner Ricardo is a very genuine likeable person. if you want to control your own day out this is the company to use.

i utilised the service of this company for sightseeing and also visiting a couple of my Costa Rican agents.. there service and pricing is fantastic. i hired one of there 8 seater mini buses for a cost of usd 180.00 per day i.e. 8 hours. the hotel i was staying at was the Riu Palace in Guanacaste. there service desk was kust outside the main hotel entrance. i booked driver Juan Carlos for a trip to coco beach and then met there driver Luis who gave myself my wife and 2 other guests a 3 beach trip Flamingo / conchas and Tamarindo beaches. we were able to stop at our convenience unlike a tour operator bus . his knowledge of the area was fabulous. we got to see a lot. we then hired his services to go to a volcano about 1 and a half hours away and were able to see volcanic boiling mud hot springs / waterfalls and walk around the jungle paths where the trees were full of howler and white face monkeys. an incredibly knowledgeable company and well worth the money .. a lot cheaper than the tours and up to 6 people at the same price !! cutting the cost to usd 30.00 per person. eddie from england
