This walk was brilliant, with a very experienced guide who knows this area of private forest inside out. His expert knowledge and his listening skills meant that we saw adult kiwi and a chick on a nighttime walk. We have stayed on Stewart Island and visited Ulva and not seen kiwi, so this is the walk to do. Being wildlife we were very lucky to have seen three kiwi in different places. Eion and Lisette are working very hard on kiwi conservation and have so much knowledge. If you are keen to see kiwi in the wild I recommend this walk. Even if you didn’t see them you might hear them and the forest at night with a few glow worms and owls is magical. A very special evening and a holiday highlight for us

This was a well thought out and excellently run night tour. Eoin is a passionate conservationist who loves his work and enjoys sharing his knowledge and joy with his guests. His patience is second to none and we were rewarded with sightings of two juvenile kiwi foraging in their own habitat. Eoin showed us the weta beetle and the sheet web spider with such enthusiasm it would have been hard not to enjoy seeing these creepy crawlies even if you were usually not so enamoured of bugs! We were even treated to a light show from some glow worms and a bush cuppa made with native vegetation. If you were not so fortunate to see kiwi, it would still be amazing to learn about ways they are protected from introduced pest species, hear their distinct calls and those of other night creatures and experience the peace of the forest after dark. Much of the fee from this tour goes towards habitat management and creating a space for minimal impact human interaction. If you are taking this tour, make sure you use heaps of odourless insect repellent, the mozzies are plentiful and ferocious! I highly recommend this tour.

Many thank to our guide Eion for a lovely night walk in his conservation area. We got incredibly lucky and sighted two kiwis, he informed us this is rare so we felt very blessed. It's a very different experience doing a guided walk at night by torchlight. It was very peaceful. I would go again if I return to Russell!

Eion was there to greet us as soon as we drove onto the property site. He is so kind and knowledgeable, and we enjoyed our conversation. It was just our family so we had a private tour to ask as many questions as we'd like. We could have easily spent an entire day touring with him. We really enjoyed the gently paced walk through the lovely regenerating forest. We had fun interacting with the mother Weka and her three juveniles, seeing the Weta in their homes as well as seeing/hearing other birds on our checklist. We also enjoyed the Kawakawa tea along the gently paced walk. I highly recommend this walk. Thanks Eion!
