Great view of the surrounding area as well as a good sign board information on the battle of the Flagstaff. We drove up and there is limited parking at the top however you're a stairwell only be about 30 minutes so the parking turns over rather quickly. Well worth the trip

Interesting summaries of historical events are present on information boards. 360 degree views of Russell and the Bay across to Paihia/Waitangi and further out into the Bay of Islands.
The walk up through the bush is worth the effort if you have the time at there are several Native birds, including Weka that are scarce elsewhere in the North

A hugely significant site in Aotearoa/New Zealand’s history. An interesting place to visit given its past. There is some interpretation at the site to give you a brief understanding of the history. On a fine day offers amazing panoramic view of the bay. A short walk or drive up from Kororāreka/Russell, about 15-20min walk up the road, ~30mins through the bush. The bush track can be uneven and muddy so be careful if you are unsteady. The wayfinding signs through the bush track are a little confusing as they all seem to say 30mins to Russell at every point along the track. Signposted as a Kiwi area, could be interesting to listen out for them at night.

We didn’t take the track from the beach and went up the steeper main road which doesn’t have a walking path. Views at the top are great. Came back down through the loop track which was cool, was a little confused by signage and saw others struggling to find the start of the trail from the beach. Up the main road and back through the loop track down probably took us 1 hour total.

This walking trail provides great views of the Bay of Islands. There is a lookout where it is possible to drive and taken in the 360 degree views or it is an uphill walk along the side of the road from the town. The 2.5 km loop is a popular loop for hikers.
There are numerous short walks in the area as well.

Walked up from Russell after getting ferry from paihaia, not that far but slightly steep but easily managed even by two pensioners. Great view from the flagstaff which seems to be the fourth incarnation of the flag pole. We then walked on Rutherford to the end of the peninsular, took the bush path kindly created by locals to the end, a bit steep in places but you do go past some very expensive looking properties, the views from the end were even better than those from the flagstaff, it was very hot but well worth the effort. After retracing our steps, I thought I saw a kiwi, we went down long beach road to the sea and had a coup,e of hours enjoying the sun and sand and sea.

The best lookout point at close distance to the small attractive town, Russell. In easy way you can go to this place by car, there is a good but winding road to this peak, or you can use it as an exercise path with bonus beautiful views at the top. This place has interesting history, where the Union Jack was first flown here in 1840, then chopped down four times up till 1845 as a symbolic gesture against British rule. Do a visit, it is free.

After getting off of the ferry from Paihia, we set off to walk up to Flagstaff Hill. A lot easier if you have a car, by the way. Took about 20 minutes of walking from the ferry to get there uphill on the road (luckily not a lot of traffic). The views from the top, while windy, are quite beautiful. Read the story of the hill and look around. Worth it.

There were young families walking up along the narrow verge on the road to the lookout and I couldn't help but think they were taking their lives into their own hands. Maybe drive up first and decide whether it's worth the risk? And maybe I'm just becoming risk averse. Having said that, the view is almost 360 degrees and is SPECTACULAR. We were there on a crisp, clear winter's day and it was good for the soul. There is a very useful tiled map that allows you to get your bearings, and the flagstaff has an informative plaque explaining its history. Don't come to Russell and deprive yourself of this view.

Drove up one night after dinner and enjoyed 360 degree views around the Bay of islands. Interesting to see he history of the site. As we were leaving heard really loud screeching and a couple of Weka came wandering into the carpark.

Can we drive up Flagstaff Hill on our own? Travelling with elderly parents and it would be difficult for them to hike up.

Yes no problem, there is a small car park at the top with a short walk to the flagstaff and there is a seat too.
