- Steph SNelson-Tasman Region, New Zealand333 contributionsNelson CathedralI went with friends to take a look at the Christmas trees that go up every year inside the cathedral - this is definitely worth going for a look, it’s a gold coin entry but lovely and takes a bit of time to wander around and look at all the trees done by business and organisations. Public toilets on the outside of the building. You need to climb the stairs from the Main Street then the enterance is around the other side but nice park like surroundings.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 11, 2024
- Sarah CAshtead, United Kingdom1,294 contributionsUnusual buildingWe looked around the cathedral after our walking tour of the town. Definitely worth it. It's a dominant building with unusual architecture, not exactly pretty but memorable, and a real presence in the town. The spiritual atmosphere inside was welcomingVisited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 27, 2024
- Stephanie MSechelt, Canada435 contributionsThe Heart of ChristmasAt Christmas time the Cathedral has a beautiful display of Christmas trees that are from various groups in the Community. They were beautiful and very touching. We were far from home and so I found myself really emotional slowly looking at them all. The Cathedral itself and magnificent, as are the grounds around it.. Any staff we encountered were welcoming and friendly. This seem like a very welcoming place to community and to visitors.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 3, 2024

It's set on parkland on a hill in a lovely part of the city. You could easily spend an hour exploring it-well worth a visit.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 25, 2024
- Grant NHastings, New Zealand1,517 contributionsLovely walk up and view back to town - cathedral is quite imposing and gardens are greatWalking up the steps from town gives a number of differing viewpoints on the way. Lovely gardens all the way. The cathedral itself is quite imposing and inside is very peaceful. Loved most of the inside but in particular the stained glass windows, the Labyrinth (very simple but very effective), the Taiaha and its story, and the historical flags. Nice to see an area put aside for scouts and guides and some of the plaques/memorials on the walls are very interesting. Well worth taking the time to visit - we returned via side paths rather than straight down the steps and saw further differing views of the cityVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 21, 2024

Visited on a wet day in Nelson. History well explained around the cathedral. Some beautiful stained glass, especially the rose window, even that had a story too.
Old photos exhibited showing the old and new cathedrals. Well worth a visit (even if it isn't raining)

Visible, easy access, open most daylight hours, with nice walkways around. Inside pleasant, and if you catch the Christmas Tree display late Nov-late January each year, a huge added bonus. 60 plus trees. Great spot to visit and look out over the Nelson town centre

Being close to the centre of Nelson and within an easy walk of Queens Gardens and the Centre of NZ Lookout, its well worth taking time out to see the Cathedral. According to their website ... "Christ Church Cathedral (Nelson Anglican Cathedral) is the principal church of the Diocese of Nelson. The Maori name for the hill on which the Cathedral stands is Piki Mai, which means "come up hither".
The tower is perhaps not quite in the style of the older English cathedrals albeit the building itself does try to emulate older architectural styles.

This was hard to miss at the end of Trafalgar St in Nelson. A nice park/garden area surrounding the church with places to sit, relax and soak up the sun (as one man was doing when we arrived). An imposing building almost 100 years old in its current form (1925 finished I think) and regardless of religion or otherwise, the architecture and scale of the building was impressive. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Worthwhile visiting the cathedral and gardens. There are some really good boards detailing the history of the cathedral and its grounds. There are many historic trees in the grounds. The church is made from marble from the Takaka Hill. Parliament Buildings are made of the same stone.

The building sits, literally, at the top of the town, above the commercial streets. The design and its tower particularly, seem very modern to my eyes. Approached by a long climb of marble steps and/ or some circular paths, to get up the mount, you arrive at the back of the church, so have to walk right around to the other side to gain entry. The gardens are well maintained, and there are even some public toilets there. Inside, it's clean lines and a very modern feel. It's light and airy. The organ & its pipes are suspended on a very unusual platform. There are stained glasswindows, 19C plaques, a labyrinth on the floor and plenty of information boards. Well worth a visit & the climb up there.

This is a beautiful church with lovely windows etc. It is so easy to find as right in the city at the top end of Trafalgar St. It is set in lovely gardens and if you go in December you will see all the different clubs churches etc who have placed Christmas trees there on display. All are different and lots are hand made with special meanings.

This Cathedral is very stunning and definitely the star of the city. The landscaping on the side of the cathedral is perfectly manicured and the plantings were done to further enhance the beauty of the Cathedral. The inside was just as stunning especially the stained glass windows. I would suggest you park and enter by walking up the steps where you can get great photos as you go up. We originally tried to enter via their parking lot but it was so small and there were no parking spaces available.
