1. To reach the seating for premium, one needs to go through the enclosure and even though there is a ‘rule’ to not go out while penguins are on the grass people are still doing so. 2. Premium accepts too many people. Technically you are...More

We did the premium package so we saw both the penguins nesting and had great seats for the nighttime viewing. It takes a while for all the little penguins to come in but it is worth the wait. You definitely need to bring warm clothes...More

A great experience. You will see the penguins returning from their day out in the ocean swimming and hunting. They walk back right in front of you to their little caves. You will not get closer than this to wild penguins. It is a great...More

Well organised and good information from the guides, as it starts to get dark it gets cold so wrap up warm.

We came to Oamaru specifically for the penguins. We got premier seats in the evening which was well worth the extra as they get much closer to you and you can walk through the colony at the end (via a bridge). It was great to...More

This reserve has nesting houses which can be viewed from above. No photos can be taken as the flash can damage their eyes. We were able to view 5 penguins on their nests and could see 2 chicks. At night you can view the penguins...More

We visited the penguin colony on a very wet, windy and cool evening and thankfully had booked premium seats where we had the best protection from the elements. An attendant gave instructions on being still, quiet and not taking photos when the penguins were arriving....More

Yes, we paid $45 for premium seats too. It was well worth the extra money, because the penguins cross right in front of the premium grandstand. Buy your tickets early, if possible, because they do sell out.

Hi, at the moment the evening viewing starts at 6.30pm, this changes to 6pm on the 16th April. The penguins generally start arriving back from sea within 30 minutes of the start time. We count the penguins for one hour, from... More
