Nearby Ljubljana and only few kilometres from the town Kamnik is located the bottom station of the cable car to Velika planina, which takes you amongst the green pastures of the mountain plateau in the heart of the Kamnik Alps. We recommend that you...more

For a truly unique experience, visit Velika Planina. To get there your first ride a cable car, then a ski lift, and finally a 20 minute walk to reach the Herdsmen’s settlement. The only sound you'll hear are the musical cow bells worn by the...More
You can get to Velika Planina by several ways. I took the easiest way, by cable car plus chair lift, both offering beautiful views of the mountains. Price for a return is 17 €. Plenty of parking space at the cable car station which is...More
Wonderful trip up the mountain, first part by gondola, second part by chairlift. Stunning views, nice hiking paths, cows walking around. Do skip the restaurant at the first stop of the chairlift, the food was overpriced and awefull.
We struggled to find information online or in Ljubliana tourist office about getting to Velika Planina without a car. However, yesterday we had a great day there and successfully used buses. We got a bus from Ljubliana to Kamnik (which runs regularly) and then the...More
We had such a great time visiting the Velika Planina. We parked in a parking lot somewhere on the east side and then hiked up to the top. The other option is getting the chair lift from the other side. It is such a unique...More
Hello! How much time do you suggest for Velika Planina in November? How long does it take to take the cable car up and walk down? I found a transfer company to pick us up in Ljublijana, give us free time in Velika Planina, and then drop us at our hotel in Lake Bled. I need to tell them how much time we want to spend? We will be there in November, and we are all avid photographers and eat up cultural experiences. I will be traveling with my mom who is not the best hiker, but she is a...More

Hi, if you're taking a cable car up and walk down, then just a walk down takes around 3 hours (1100vm). That is if you're returning to your starting point, but there are other, shorter options (if you return to Kranjski Rak)
Half day in Bled and half day in...? (4 Replies)
So excited about our trip to Slovenia and Croatia in July! We hope to add a few hours in the Velika Planina meadow or Pokljuka Plateau to a day trip to Bled (it's a Sunday in July so it will be quite busy there) Our ideal would be to enjoy quiet, scenic beauty while getting a sense of shepherds' lives. Which would you choose? Thanks

If you do a day trip to Bled then Pokljuka is better, but Velika planina is better in the way of see a shepherd life. It's totally authentic even in Slovenia with that wooden house.

A day trip to Piran or Kamnik-Velika Planina (3 Replies)
Hello; We will make 3 days trip to Slovenia at the beginning of September. I could not decide whether to make a day trip to Piran or Kamnik-Velika Planina. Both seems very attractive, however we have to choose one of them. Which one should we choose? Can you give me some advices?

That is a bit like comparing chalk and cheese! One is a coastal resort the other is in the mountains, so, at the end of the day, it really depends on what you are more interested in - pristine nature or the coast.
