Being for few days in holiday we visited the Horses Waterfall. It is a great place to visit. It is not hard to arrive there after a short road with chairlift, you will walk on feet like 40 minutes to see the waterfall. It is placed in the great Rodna Mountains with a view that take your breath away. You can take photos very close to that objectif and enjoy all around. If you come in Borsa I recommend strongly to visit this place.

The waterfall itself was a bit disappointing but the road made up for it. We took the chairlift from Borsa up the local ski slope which takes quite some time so you can get a good view of the surrounding. The stroll through the woods was also nice.

When you are traveling to the region of Maramures (one of the most beautiful parts in Romania), beside the cultural immersion , the traditions and wooden churches - you have also several beautiful natural landmarks - and for those of you who are interested in discovering the natural beauty of this area, well here it is a teaser.
The Horses Waterfall - a waterfall as the name is saying - very close to the Resort of Borsa , dropping from the Rodnei Mountains in several steps - and totaling 90 meters in height being the tallest waterfall in Romania.
Getting there can be done in 3 ways: take one of the tracks that starts in Borsa and climb your way the fall, the other option is take the chairlift and after a 15 minutes comfortable ride - you find yourself at the beginning of a 25 minutes track downhills and like 35 minutes uphill the return - so yes it requires a bit of effort but it is all well worth it ... and the 3rd option is take the cable car to the top of the Olympic Ski slope of Borsa and from there is 5,5 - 6 hours on a marked trail till the waterfall.
And yes there is a story/legend involving horses and bears - I will not talk to much about it - and leave it to you to discover it.
Now - since you will need to do some tracking - wear boots - not flipflops or other totally inappropriate footwear for tracking in the mountains - the slopes you will need to climb can be demanding towards your ankles and if you will have even a small rain during your visit the slopes can become slippery very easily so you'll need the extra grip of your boots on your way back.
Overall a great place - extraordinary scenery - definitely worth the visit - when in the area go and check it for yourself.

One of the most beautiful and long waterfall in Europe: 100 m at sight, but another 150 m through above forest! You can go there by foot (2 hours from Borsa Complex), or you can take the chair-lift up to 1380 m and then a nice descending path (30 minutes) till you reach the base of this waterfall. After that, you should go back on the opposite slope, and take the upper path (which goes for the lake): after 20 minutes of walking, you'll see the WHOLE waterfall (through forest and on wall/cliff).

The biggest waterfall in Romania, in a beautiful landscape. It is also not very difficult to be reached. You must drive to Borsa and look on google maps for "telescaun borsa" (chairlift Borsa) - unfortunately, otherwise it is impossible to find it, it is not signalized. You will reach this way the chairlift and you must take it (about 5-10 minutes trip, beautiful itself; you will a very nice overview of the surrounding area). After leaving the chairlift, you must walk about 20 minutes...and there it is. It fully deservers the effort to see it!

To get to the waterfall you can either take the ski lift from Complex Borsa then hike to the waterfall or hike up the ski slope and continue on to the waterfall. As others mentioned, the ski lift option is only available if there are sufficient numbers of people going. I choose to hike the whole way. The best way up is to follow under the ski lift. It took me 45 minutes to reach the top. Then there are signs to Cascada Cailor which was another 20 minutes along a dirt logging road, which isn't in the best of shape. I highly recommend wearing appropriate footwear. The cascada is completely worth it and breathtaking. My favourite so far. I also climbed up the waterfall a bit along the side.
Heading back to the ski lift, there is also a sign for the lake which is about 90 minutes away. I didn't go all the way to the lake but took the road 30 minutes up to a fabulous meadow with stunning views of the Rodnei Munții range. Also from this meadow you can follow the road to the right to the lake or you can follow the road to the left to get to Prislop Pass. Either way takes you about an hour.
It was a good day of hiking with great scenery! I totally recommend seeing more than the waterfall.

Situated in a beautiful landscape, the Horses Waterfall can be easily reached from the town of Borsa. A less than 30 minutes descend through a forest situated above the main Borsa ski slope will take you to this waterfall. I went there during the wintertime and the trail proved to be a little bit difficult, as the snow on the ground was transformed into ice on some portions. However, with caution, this obstacle was easily overridden. The waterfall was 90 percent covered with ice, leaving only some small openings where we could see the water flowing. The view was magnificent! To reach the top of the cliff, where the trail starts, you can take a 17 minutes ride with the cable car for skiers, or you can choose the less comfortable, but more interesting option of climbing on a trail, leaving straight from the Borsa town, for about 2 hours. That means a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes of hiking from Borsa to the Horses Waterfall. The cable car for skiers is not very pricey, as one ride both ways, costs 20 lei (about 4 euros).

Maybe it was the expectations from one of the highest waterfalls, but we've seen more impressive ones.
The cable car going up had excellent views, the walk is on a wide trail, you don't feel the nature as you could, and many people come to the area.
Near the waterfall nice places to sit by the stream..
The climb back is a bit hard, but manageable.
All in all a nice day. Lower your expectations.

If you happen to be in Borsa you definetly have to see this. The waterfall can be easily reached by the cable, then one can go back in Borsa by foot in one hour following the red triangle

Is there any help for adults who find it hard to go to the waterfall? Is there a horse-drawn carriage that helps?

hi, can you please tell me how long the chairlift takes? I'm quite frightened at the thought of it!
Written July 2, 2016
Hi. I think it was probably a 15 minute ride each way. It has a bar that comes over you with a foot rest, just like skiing. With the exception of 1 short section it doesn't feel high off the ground (maybe 30-50 feet off the ground). The men helping you on and off the lift are great! Don't look at your feet or over your shoulder and you should be ok :).

hello, I wonder if any one knows if the cable car is working in October?
Is it open all the year?
Written June 1, 2016
What is the exact location from which to take the cable car to the waterfall?
What are the hours of operation of the cable car?
Written April 16, 2016
The cable car location is in Borsa resort and on the top you need to walk the trail through the woods, very easy, around 30 min. to waterfall. The cable car operate if there is a minimum requests of 20-30 people to use it at the first hour in the morning 8-9 o'clock, and probably every 1-2 hours again.
