My 4 year old son and I were booked on Dolphin Encounter. As it was not a busy day it wasn't able to go ahead, but rather than have us go home disappointed, they offered us this - just the two of us with the skipper! The encounter itself was superb. We really enjoyed being up close to the albatross... More

Here's a secret - while on a family vacation to New Zealand, we expressly went out of our way to drive up to Kaikoura from Christchurch before doubling back down. And we did it to satisfy my birding interests. I had two days in Kaikoura. They didn't have the minimum number to make a pelagic trip, so I booked a... More

This trip is a once in a lifetime trip and I have been lucky to go twice. Albatross heaven but also home to hector's dolphin, button's shearwater and whales.

A wonderful opportunity to see the beautiful sea birds of NZ up close. A wide diversity of birds come visit the boat (as they would local fishing vessels) affording a comparatively rare chance to see a wide range of birds from only a few meters (often less). Favourites were the albatross (of which I saw several species in good number).... More

Just a great outing! Tracy was a super informative guide. We saw 6 types of albatross. Noisiest birds, but so majestic. Was just a great experience. Highly recommend it. CL

A unique experience! Would thoroughly recommend this trip but, if you travel from sea sickness, make sure you take some tablets before you go. The sea can be rough and the birds are literally at the back of the boat so you`re not looking out at the horizon. You won`t need a big lens to photograph the birds and the... More

Kaikoura has one of the Premier Marine Mammal and Seabird experiences on the planet!!! The team at Encounter will make your trip informative, entertaining, and AMAZING. Weather can have an impact but who controls that? It is an experience on the Sea but.....even if you're a landlubber to the core the opportunity to see a Wandering or Royal Albatross eyeball... pros: small, intimate boat very close encounter with some beautiful (and not so beautiful) species saw many albatross variations, fighting kestrels, terns also saw a huge seal and a huge school of enthusiastically jumping dusky dolphins! run by a friendly, knowledgable local hot chocolate and biscuits provided truly stunning views on a sunny day cons: none, but probably less enjoyable... The other reviews have said it all really - it's fantastic and you would have to be made from stone not be be impressed by getting up so close to such impressive wildlife. Skippers are experts in their field and make the trip a joy.
