A hidden gem easily missed by so many tourists fixated on seeing the retreating Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers. It is well worth half a day to drive from Hokitika to Lake Kaniere and around the back on gravel road towards Hokitika Gorge finishing off with that walk. Calming walks in nature along with unbelievable scenery, water is fresh but... More

We drove from Hokitika to Lake Kaniere and then on to Hokitika Gorge care of a Google Maps driving itinerary. Just added in a couple of extra stops to a trip to Ross. Started with a beautiful stroll to Canoe Creek, then a separate look at the Waterfall and nearby beach.

One of the largest lake in Hokitika. Local people will be available here on weekends. A great place for recreation. I have my quality time by swimming, riding a boat, playing canoe. My first experience to swim with the ducks here. The water is so clear. Across the lake we can see a very green trees.

After hokitika gorge we drove the loop around the lake stopping at the waterfall and the end of the lake. The views make the drive worthwhile.

One of my favorite places to take my overseas visitors. The drive tjrough the bush with glimpses of the lake. The lush pastures amongst the bush. Wow. Then you arrive at Dorothies place. Always a lovely place to stop and take photos of the visitors with the beautiful Dorothy in the back ground. Then its onto Lake Kaniere. The jetty... More

an idyllic place to walk through the forest, hear the birds and not to hard to find a quiet spot to swim in the calm clear water.

If you're looking for peace, tranquillity or beauty, this is the place to visit. Although you do have to share with water skiing and jetski people. If you time it right you can have the lake to yourself. Amazing place to photograph. Lovely walks. Great for picnics as long as you have your insect spray. Swimming also.

We lunched at the lake whilst on the West Coast Cycle Trail. We were a little disappointed. At the time of our visit, the water was very grey and unappealing...could be because there hard been a lot of rain in the previous 24 hours.

Was in Hoki for the wild food festival, went for a drive out to the lake, amazing and on a good day you can see Mount Cook, the lake looked great and wish I had the boat there, worth another trip to this location.

This was pretty and not really out of the way but the day we visited may have been overcast and just wasn't quite what we had hoped from other reviews and pictures. Not sure I would go out of the way to make the drive if you had limited time. Gravel narrow roads.
