Our day with Steve carving pounami far exceeded any expectations we arrived with. Us was myself and two children aged 11 and 12. Steve was warm, welcoming and wise, bringing a richness to the experience well beyond the carving itself. Steve is a very experienced(30+ years) tutor, and brings with it all the patience, humility and respect for those he... More

It was raining in Hokitika (and pretty much everywhere else on the west coast) and we saw something about carving your own jade on the little tourist tv program at the hotel. We asked our front desk receptionist and she pointed us to Bonz 'N Stonz. It's a stonz (ha) throw away from the clock and just a little unassuming... More

Steve has this way with people, it''s almost impossible to describe. He is the kind of teacher that gets the best out of each person that step into his workshop. By giving us full control over every steps of the way and simply guiding our hands in the right direction, we ended with the most unique jade necklace that truly... More

We had the best time designing, carving and finishing our items at Bonz n Stonz. This was the perfect way to spend a cold wet day and we got to experience how much effort goes into each piece. We ended up with two Bone and one Jade designs that turned out so much better than we had hoped! Steve was... More

When you travel through NZ, you find jade and bone carvings everywhere. Now you can buy something or you make it yourself. We spent today an entire day with Steve and had such a great time. We? That is us parents and our two daughters (9,10 years old). Steve listened to our ideas, helped us to turn them into amazing... More

We arrived in Westport late afternoon for an overnight stay..with 2 kids aged 8 and 10 in tow, we went for an explore. The kids were given NZ$20 each to spend on a souvenir...we found our way into Stonz and Bonz...the kids wanted greenstone..no Greenstone under $20...Steve (owner/carver and all round good guy)...got into the spirit of the souvenir hunt..."hey,... This was one of the best days in all my time in NZ and I had never done any carving before. The guys in the shop let you design your own pendant. There are lots of books of designs if you need any help. Once you have your design you choose a piece of rock and draw your design onto... More

I really enjoyed carving some local jade. Steve guides you through the process by showing you how to achieve what you want to do, but letting you do 90% of the work so that you can be proud of what you accomplished.

If you would like to do bone carving, shell or jade, than this is it! You can take the whole day if you want and you get excellent guidance from Steve. He is really good at what he does and he gives you good directions and helps you along the process of making you own piece of jewellery. This is... More

What to do in rainy weather? Had the most exciting morning making greenstone (pounamu) pendants. Time can vary from 4hrs upwards depending on your design. This is for anyone who visits NZ and wants to learn something new. K, a happy and humorous Moari who studied at Te Puia in stone carvings, instructed us throughout the morning. We chose our... More
