Visited on Saturday 112th May. When we were there it was very busy but then the train from Christchurch had just arrived and was getting ready for the return journey. Heaps of brochures available of things to do locally, friendly staff to assist you and souvenirs.

We can here in December. Good friendly staff who had some good local knowledge. Locals however where rude and unfriendly and seemed to resent tourists. If you are thinking about traveling down the west coast of NZ my advice would be to keep driving and go past Greymouth to the better attractions further south.

Thank you for your review of the Information Centre on your visit. Very disappointed to hear your experience was not so favourable with our locals. Greymouth is the central hub of the West Coast and offers a wide range of activities from rafting, kayaking, horse trekking, caving tours, tubing, scenic tours, unique activities like knife making and greenstone carving, the famous Monteith's Brewery tours and a family favourite Shantytown Heritage Park. We are very centrally located and a short drive to many other activities like Punakaiki Blow Holes and Pancake Rocks, the Tree Top Walkway and the Denniston Mine Experience and not to mention the famous Glacier Tours. I hope the rest of your tour of the West Coast region was a pleasant one.

The visitor information centre is small but has all the brochures and maps that we needed. The staff were very knowledgeable and able to give clear directions.

Thank you for your feedback. We are a busy compact i-SITE with our large gift shop and six rental car companies all in our Railway Station. It is great to hear staff were helpful in their knowledge and the brochure display was adequate. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday on the West Coast.

We dropped in to Greymouth Information Centre to find out about things to do in the area as well as what to see on the way to Westport.
The young lady was so helpful giving us map and info sheets as well as giving us directions to a waterfall. It so nice to know you are going to get the most out of a visit to an area.
The information centre is located in the train station right in town. It has a great gift shop with lots of nice well priced goodies.
Well worth a visit.

The fact that there are only 21 attractions in or around Greymouth - and these include the very good Shantytown which is several miles out - tells you all you need to know. Th iSite itself is attached to the railway station- you'd think that there would be something to do in Greymouth once you had completed the train ride - but no!

We noticed a walkway across the road from the station, and asked the iSite if this was a good walk and suitable for a picnic. They said it was; we set out on a featureless single track for some 15 minutes hoping to reach the sea, but reached a small industrial area and turned back. We got back in the car and looked for some form of public beach - Greymouth is on the coast, after all, where the Grey (well named) river meets the sea - but no such luck. We ended up driving out of town back towards Arthur's Passand had our picnic there.

The area you walked to is the wharf, a fishing port of Greymouth and major employer of many local families. There are a number of areas to stop for a picnic including Coal Park which you would have walked past or our very new town square again on the path you took or as a car was available many other areas within a short drive. Here are some of the activities in the area, as mentioned Shantytown Heritage Park, if you like history and culture then this is the place to go. Greymouth is the home to the Monteith's Brewery, a NZ craft beer and you can take a tour of the brewery with beer tasting. It has one of NZ's best 4WD quad bike/buggy companies offering tours through native NZ bush. We have scenic tours available to the famous Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes, Hokitika Gorge, Tree Top Walkway and the Glaciers. There are caving tours where you can see glow worms. Heritage tours taking you to historic mining sites such as Brunner Mine. Rafting with half day, full day and overnight camping experience! We have the Wilderness Trail, a four day bike ride between Greymouth and Ross so you are able to hire a bike and do some of this trail. If you like fishing, we have plenty of rivers and lakes and a fishing guide can take you out. Keen on a surf well you are only a five minute drive from some of the best surfing beaches! And what is more we have some of the most beautiful sunsets on offer, the Coast is famous for them along with so many stunning walks. The district has so much to offer the visitor.
