About
On the road to Shantytown, just 600 metres from the main road, you will find Garth Wilson's Jade studio and gallery. With a large parking and turning area you can come in and see Garth carving New Zealand pounamu (jade). Garth is a descendant of the Ngati Mahaki and Ngati Waewae tribes who were the original pounamu traders in New Zealand. This allows Garth and his family customary rights to go onto West Coast mountain sides and rivers to collect the pounamu (jade) themselves. Garth hand draws the designs and carves all sculptures, pendants and jewellery from New Zealand stone. Come in and handle some of the best New Zealand pounamu, find out about Garth's family history with the Pounamu, see some of our artefacts and discover the meanings and stories behind the Maori designs. Garth Wilson Jade - for that special piece!

Visiting Garth and Jo at the studio is a wonderful experience - you hear about the journey of the pieces, from how Garth and his family search the rivers for the raw stone, how he carries them back and works on them for months, first crudely then intricately to make the most beautiful pounamu we have ever seen. We commissioned a piece for a very special occasion and the result was so much better than we had hoped for, and learning how to wear it before gifting it so your mana is gifted too just made it so very personal. Thank you Garth and Jo, Arohanui (much love)

Kia Ora You are most welcome for the tour and I am so glad that you enjoyed hearing about my family history with the pounamu and how I create the pieces from the raw stone to the finished Taonga. I was honoured to be able to create a special Taonga for you to gift and I am so happy to hear that it turned out so much better than you had hoped for. You have made my day :-). I wish you all the very best for a safe and healthy future. Kindest regards Nga mihi Garth

I decided to get something really special for my wife for our honeymoon in NZ. I was looking for something unique for her. We didn't visit Garth and Jo's place in person but I had been emailing Garth and Jo for weeks to make a pendant for her and a bracelet for myself. The outcomes were just overwhelming. Garth and Jo mailed the pendant and bracelet to our hotel before our arrival. The pendant and bracelet were absolutely stunning and we were so touched by the letters came with them. We will definitely visit Garth and Jo when we visit NZ again next time.

We are both very happy to hear that you were overwhelmed with our work and found the pieces absolutely stunning, and that you were touched with our letter. We look forward to meeting you both in person should you come to the West Coast next time you are in New Zealand. Kind regards and the best of wishes for a wonderful future together. Nga mihi Garth and Jo

When traveling to New Zealand, like anywhere else in the world, you're bombarded by souvenir stores & tourist 'Hot Spots' at every turn. When I was wanting a 'perfect' pounamu with real connected heritage to the land I've grown so emotionally attached to, I feared I was going to end up returning home empty handed...for the second time. Thousands of mass produced, same as same as, designed in NZ but made in China, so called "Real NZ Jade" trinkets & charms later...I found Garth's Studio. As soon as my son & I met him we knew we had found what I'd been looking for. I think that if you're going to return home with a true piece of New Zealands culture & heritage, it must have an indelible connection to the land it came from, & the craftsman who made it. Garth's heritage & knowledge was a wonder to discover &, not only am I extremely happy to be wearing a piece of his work, I'm honored to be carrying that connection with me every day. I've not removed my Manaia since returning home & quite frankly, I never will. I'm looking forward to catching up with Garth again on my 3rd trip

Visited Garth and his studio with the intention of just looking and came out owning an absolutely beautiful piece. Garth and his wife were such nice, friendly people who patiently explained everything about Pounamu from his heritage to how he makes it. Worth a visit

I wanted to give my wife something that celebrated our 35 years together and hoped a simple green stone pounamu twist from New Zealand would be perfect as it worked on so many levels, it celebrated our lives entwined, green is her favorite colour, it could perhaps replace a much loved, but sadly broken, white twist she had bought in NZ and it would give her a link with her brother who recently emigrated to NZ.

I told her that when I set out to buy one I though it would be a simple online purchase from a UK retailer but how wrong I was! Tracking down the "real thing" takes a bit of work. First you have to find someone who sells jade jewelry in the UK but you can't, so then you start looking at NZ retailers. Once you have found one in NZ you have to check that the jade they are selling is from NZ and not imported from Canada or China or, even worse imported into China from Canada, carved by a Chinese carver, imported to New Zealand and then sold as the genuine article because its made to a New Zealand design! Then you need to be sure the seller is legally entitled to collect it from the rivers where it naturally occurs and that he or she is a native New Zealander with the skill to carve the Pounamu into the Pikoura you want.

This is a quest filled with pitfalls but that, if you persevere, you will eventually find what you are looking for and his name is Garth.

I told Garth what I was looking for, a Pikorua of a particular size and shade of green, asked if he could you ship it to the UK and how much would it cost? Yes he could, photos were sent and prices agreed. Then Garth suggested that shipping it via her brother would allow him to wear it and put his Mana into it before it was gifted to her and that I should do the same and give it to her warm from my body.

So - a small piece of Pounamu from a river in a country on the other side of the world was collected and carved by a native New Zealander who sent it to a guy who comes from England but lives in New Zealand, who wore it for a week before sending it, via his son who lives in England, to his brother in law, who also wore it for a week before gifting it to his wife to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary.

When I placed it round her neck we all became a little emotional and to say she was moved doesn't come close to describing what was happening. She loves the Pikorua for its simple beauty, but she treasures it for the links it provides to her loved ones. I don't think she will ever take it off!

It only remains for me so say that Garth and Jo turned what started as a simple online purchase into a wonderful experience culminating in a perfect gift for the perfect woman.

If I ever get back to NZ their store in Shantytown will be Number One on the itinerary.

Try them – you won’t ever regret it!!

Kia ora Alan Thank you so much for your kind words. We were only too happy to help out in any way we could and we were overjoyed that it all worked out so well for you and particularly your wife, Mandy. It worked out perfectly being able to share it with her brother David, before it was sent to you in the UK. We hope that it has helped Mandy feel closer to her brother when he is so far from home. We are really happy that it was the perfect gift for your perfect woman. Best wishes for a happy and healthy future together. Nga mihi Garth and Jo

After reading many reviews online, I knew that this was the place where I needed to go to get go to find my own special souvenir.
Iwas greeted in the car park by Garth's wife and welcomed most warmly. She patiently explained the history of the jade pieces that were on display, how they're found and the meanings of each design.
Having done my research I knew what I was looking for and was encouraged to try on several pieces to see which one spoke to me. What mattered most for me was the genuine story behind each piece, seeing the place where it was carved, knowing that it is done by an expert craftsmen who is furthering his own heritage.
After making my special purchase I went on to other commercial places in town and while there are many were beautiful pieces at perhaps a cheaper price, none came close to the significance and story behind Garth's work. Thrilled to hear that their son is also learning the craft.
If you are planning of buying a piece of authentic jade, this is the only place to visit.

Can not tell you how happy my Wife and I were when we received our special pendants. Garth and Jo make a great team. Jo answered all my questions and had great suggestions. When you get something from Garth it is authentic he picked the Pounamu designed it and craved it. Like I said it is not a souvenir it is a piece of New Zealand and a true keepsake. Once again my saying comes true New Zealand is great and the people are better.

Garth and Jo provide beautiful and authentic designs of high quality jade/pounamu from their workshop and studio on the Rutherglen Rd between Greymouth and Hokitikia. Their level of service and follow-up is second-to-none and they are genuinely helpful and nice people. 'Garth Wilson Jade' should be on the top of your MUST-DO activities and sight-seeing list on the West Coast. They have a great range of genuine real New Zealand jade/pounamu pendants and gifts that are uniquely NZ. Prices are reasonable for life-long and special gifts.
