Mt Manaia is one of a cluster of jagged, bush covered peaks towering 403 metres above sea level. There are some great information boards at the start of this walk. It begins with a lovely view south from the early settlers' memorial and continues into the bush at an easy grade. Then the steps begin, which continue almost continuously to the top. A wooden staircase leads to the highest point accessible to anyone without climbing gear or the remotest fear of heights. The views are two-fold. To one side of the pillar, north-east over Whangarei Harbour towards the city, while to the other there's a great view of Bream Head with the Hen and Chicken islands behind. But the best view of the lot comes, not from the summit, but from heading back down around 200m from the top where a clear but unmarked path heads left and, after just a minute or so, leads to a large, rock platform. From here, there's a spectacular uninterrupted view to the jagged hills of Mt Lion and the islands, as well as the best view of the summit's rock pillars. You must return the same way and expect the hike to take about 2 hrs. Medium fitness required, bring a water bottle and sturdy walking shoes recommended. Don't forget your camera and be sure to post pictures to this listing!

Myself and my 4 girls aged 9 12 12 and 15 decided to climb Mt Manaia... I'm so glad we did really well maintained track, great information about how it was formed and about Kauri die back. I was so impressed with my girls we sped up the stairs and the view was utterly amazing. If you are reasonably fit... More

This is a spectacular track with many steps. It is very steep but a very rewarding workout. Taken slowly it is manageable by most people. It is very tough on knees coming down. Local youngsters have been known to run it.

This is quite a challenging walk so a degree of fitness is recommended. Take your time and enjoy some stops on the way up to appreciate some of the views.

I found this walk challenging, mostly because of the amount of stairs to get to the top. Amazing view once you're up there. Make sure to go up on a sunny day. Take a water bottle. Great to watch the sun set from up the top, but maybe take a flashlight if you do that. Walk takes about an hour... More

From Whangarei upwards is a beautiful part of the world and Mt Manaia is no exception. It's a great way of getting fit climbing the stairs to the top but the view is definitely worth the climb. Afterwards You can refresh yourself With a cold drink or a bite to eat at the local cafe

Me and my mates climb this beauty every summer. It takes roughly 1 hour depending on pace but the views are amazing. It is located right by a stretch of beachs which allows for a cool off after.

Whangarei has a lot to offer outdoor enthusiasts, with white sand beaches, numerous walking tracks and even caves to explore. But if we had to choose just one must-do activity in the area it would have to be climbing Mount Manaia. This short but fairly intense walk on a well formed and well maintained track climbs steadily through bush before... More

I was fortunate enough to have been abbe to climb to the very top of Manaia in the 1970's/ on several occasions.Bollocks to the PC crap about the reverence of scaling the peak., I was was totally in awe of the positions grandeur and could feel the spiritual impact of the occasion. It would be fabulous for the locals to... More

beautifull hike to the top of mt Manaia, trough local bush and a well maintained track, once at the top the view's are just stunning, it can be a bit scary all the way on the top on really windy day's but use common sense and stay in the center of the top

If you are not super fit then take your time. There is a lot of steps all the way to the top. Take a cold drink and snack to have at the top, you will need it. The views are spectacular and breath taking. Glad I did it but never again
