Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand.

The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more...

The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups.

Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

Well worth the short detour to this lovely garden setting of beautiful flowers and ferns and a rewarding big pool at the top of this old landscaped quarry. They have done a great job. There is a nice cafe for a coffee too.

The Quarry Gardens in Whangarei would have to be one of the hidden tourist secrets (for garden lovers) North of Auckland. Entirely maintained by volunteers it offers a variety of shorter and medium walks, and many interesting plants grouped into particular themes. A pond and waterfalls in the upper part of the garden enhance the experience and bridges provide additional... More

Had a lovely walk through this very nice reclaimed quarry. Heaps of interesting plants interestingly laid out. Nice little waterfall. Very pleasant. Pity the cafe was closed.

The Quarry Gardens are such a fantastic place to wander - and within 5 minutes of the CBD. An old quarry site that has been lovingly developed over the years by volunteer gardeners into wonderful sub-tropical gardens, a lake and to make it even better, the fabulous Quail Cafe when you've finished exploring. We take all our visitors there, and... More

Wow - what a surprise - the garden is obviously a labour of love for those who work there. If you enter the garden via the cafe, then you can pick up an information leaflet which includes details of the walking trails and you can get any questions answered by a helpful volunteer. There is no entrance fee to the... More

The work that has gone into forming this garden is fantastic. We learnt what it was like before the gardens were established. Great work by all the volunteers

Beautiful peaceful and fascinating place to visit. I am not a gardener but this makes me want to plant a garden. Lots of lovely smells from the plants. Suitable for all ages. Kids will think it is magical.
