This was a great place for our group of upper middle aged folk to have a three day break exploring a corner of New Zealand we would not normally visit, with a fantastic lodge, food and walks. Claire was very welcoming and provided us with a very warm welcome, all the information we needed, and generous and beautiful meals. We... More

We booked the 3 night option at Bream Head Coast Walks Lodge with a different walk each day. The walks range from easy to advanced with options for each walk. You experience the beauty of Whangarei Heads from unspoilt Ocean Beach to dense bush, hills and farmland. The Te Whara track we walked on the 2nd day was by far... More

This an attractive beach with several walkways all well formed. Lots of sand dunes for play. I was impressed with notices that told people to take their rubbish home. Sadly from observing the road sides some chucked it out as they left the area.

This loop is not long but the start is steep as you climb to the ridge of Mt Aubrey. The track is well kept and mostly good surface and stairs but hiking poles are recommended. Great views. Down is a bit tougher but take your time. You then do a short Coastal trail back to the start (with a few... More

Great walk from Smugglers Cove across cliff tops to Ocean Beach. Designated and marked track. Lots of steps so reasonable mobility required

My wife gave me this four day holiday for my 70th birthday in April and I'm still talking about it in August. Not having my own transport, I bused it from Auckland to Whangarei and transport was arranged for me to Bream Head, which took about half an hour. The location is truly specatacular and the accommodation was perfect for... More

Modern, comfortable and well-appointed accommodation. Well suited to larger groups of friends or family. Numerous outdoor activities in a very beautiful part of Northland. Local conservation efforts are succeeding and native birdlife is returning. Highly recommend

We were the only ones out on the beach on this winters day. So worth the climb up the steep sandy hill. The views over Ocean Beach are stunning and looking down onto the sea breaking onto the rocks at the heads was spectacular. Large seabirds were congregating below, an added bonus for me.

What a great break from busy lives - a very comfortable home-like lodge (we specially loved the luxurious outdoor bath) and nothing to do but get up each morning and marvel at the stunning scenery and new views that each day's well planned walks brought. Then at the end of the day, wine and fabulous home cooked, gluten free meals... More

It's well worth the climb when you see the ocean views from the cliff top. The beach walk from the Mangawhai Surf Club is easy going, the climb to the cliff top is puff inducing for an oldie like me but still manageable in my 70s.
