The Whangarei Heads peninsula is becoming the playground and place to holiday. The 6000 hectare peninsula is a water and nature lover's paradise and a great place to stay on your Northland holiday or weekend break away. The peninsula is ringed with numerous sheltered harbour bays and coves on one side, and expansive white sandy ocean beaches on the other. The waters of Parua Bay, McLeod's, Taurkura, Reotahi and Urquhart's Bays provide numerous family friendly swimming and picnicking spots. On its pacific coastal side the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach and to the North the popular Taiharuru and Pataua estuaries. Between these coastal fringes lie towering 20 million year old volcanic peaks, "the backbone" of Whangarei Heads with Mt Mania and Mt Lion rising steeply from the sea to over 400 metres. These mountains are surrounded by rich native bush and are abundant with wildlife including noted populations of North Island Brown kiwi.

Beautiful and relaxing beach where you can see so many families having fun. I went there on a sunny day and it was absolutely amazing and unique.

Not only is this area visually beautiful, it is historic as well. Check out the old church in McLeods Bay or the old cemetary. Drive to 'Oceans' Beach and wander along, often by yourself. Come back through all the Bays and have a great lunch in McLeod Bay, then view the Refinery from Reotahi. A lovely way to spend a... More

A beautiful location with superb views. Takes a few minutes to go in off the main highway, but worth the detour.

Just a beautiful and relaxing place to unwind, walk, explore, swim, surf and generally soak up more of New Zealand's amazing beauty. I lived in Whangarei for years and never got tired of spending a day or even just a few hours out there. Even the drive out is scenic and there are plenty of side roads to explore. Every... More

The heads are a lovely area and well worth a visit. The scenery is well worth the drive from Whangarei and if you have the time to stay for an extended period, then you're a lucky bugger.

A nice and realtively easy hike with a well-maintained track and a lot of stairs! Took an hour to go up with our 5 year-old and the 360 view at the top is spectacular. Free parking at Mount Manaia Club.

We were warned that there are lots of steps. That is true. Park in the Peach Cove carpark about 1km from the Ocean Beach carpark. The times on the signposts are very generous to get to Peach Cove along a well engineered track. You walk through pristine bush with viewing gaps to admire the stunning north, west and south views... Whangarei. Heads is a bit of a drive but the scenery is well worth the trip through the little villages and the the bay's along the way. A quaint little place and when you arrive a beautiful beach, sometimes wild, sometimes calm. A short walk from the car park gets you on to the beach but if you don't want to do... More

Great little peninsular, bays, volcanic outcrops, ocean, surf, beach. You name it, you can do it here. Easy journey, only one way in and out and delightful both ways
