Try taking a drive up both sides of the river
Apr 2021
Be brave and drive up the west bank of the river starting on Somme Parade.
As you climb up in the hills you lose the river but gain some great scenary on this 30km logging road.
Once you finally gain the highest point turn left for Kai Iwi.
Part way downhill back to SH3 you will see the white timber gates of Bushy Park - stop & visit.

Whanganui River Road

Worth doing this road rather than SH4 if you have the time. Spectacular scenery at every bend and no traffic.

Lovely walks
Mar 2021 • Couples
There are some easy walking paths along the river. Great place for a wander. Lovely parks for children.

Also very popular with Dog walkers. Easy to cross with the bridges having both cars and foot traffic

Nicer than expected
Jan 2021
Last week we had a short stop in Whanganui on a drive from Wellington to New Plymouth. It had been a very long time since our last visit to this town. We were surprised to find the town to be much more pleasant than we remembered! The riverfront through the town is a pleasant place for walking. There are places you can go to get a good view of the river and town - such as the tower at the top of the Durie Elevator. You can also do cruises on the river on the Waimarie steamship. A river always gives a town a bit more character.
You can also go much further afield up the river, for several hours or days.

Beautiful Ancient Waterway
Jan 2021
So many ways to experience this beautiful river. The lower reaches are tidal and the river looks beautiful on a full tide. On a low tide watch the wading birds on the mudflats, so beautiful at sunset. See it from above in its full glory as it snakes through the city from the top of Durie Hill. Walk or cycle the paved riverbank. Take a leisurely trip on the Waimarie paddle steamer. Feeling energetic? Take a half day up to a 5 day kayak/canoe trip into the upper reaches. We drove the winding River Road through original small settlements dotted along the bank up to Pipiriki and then took a Whanganui River Adventures jetboat on a four hour trip further up the river to hike to the Bridge to Nowhere. It was amazing learning the history of the river and the area from our tour guide along the way. This river certainly has some tales to tell.

Must visit for the runners

I have been living in Whanganui for 8 months now and almost every evening i try to go for a run across the 3 bridges on this river. Good place to burn out those calories while enjoying the calmness and scenic beauty of this river and the nature.

Interesting river
Jul 2020 • Couples
Start your day at the Saturday morning market beside the river in Whanganui then travel up the road beside the river. It will take you through some awesome scenery and if you feel like an adventure- organise a jet boat trip to the bridge to nowhere. This river is long, wide and has many different features that are definitely worth exploring.
