This Visitor Centre is a must-go at the start of a visit to Margaret River area. The volunteer staff are helpful and informative and there is a wealth of brochures and map information to collect on the area. Even if you have been to the area before things change from year to year. There is also a wide selection of tempting tourist goods for young and old. I was impressed by the high standard. The display of wildflowers in the window is particularly impressive. It is good to see the area thriving again after pandemic times.

Hi there car0leb66,
So nice to have our visitors back after a challenging few years so thank you for your lovely comments.
You are correct, things change year to year but even season to season and I am always happy to lay down the challenge to any repeat visitors that there is always something new or interesting to check out. The next 6 months will be incredible for bushwalking, wildlife and wildflowers.
We also have a sister visitor centre in Busselton so hope we get to see you again soon.

The staff were lovely and were helpful in providing tips and suggestions on what to see whilst I was in the Margaret River area.
They also have a great selection of reasonably priced gifts, with lots of information and brochures on what to see and do in the area. A must visit.

This is the best visitors’ center that I’ve ever experienced. The staff are knowledgeable and adept at customizing local day trips for you. We told the employee where we’d like to go, and she highlighted the fastest route there, the most scenic drive back, and good restaurants and attractions along the way. They even have a touch screen in the window for after hours use.

I had a disappointing experience with the staff, particularly with one woman at the checkout. She completely ignored me despite me standing there with several items to purchase, which was both frustrating and bizarre. In my experience, Australians are typically friendly and helpful, so this interaction stood out in a negative way. I hope this was just an off day for the cashier, but I would think twice before returning.

I visited on Saturday 9 January. Despite the front saying that it opened at 9am, a group of us were left standing waiting at 9am, wondering what time it actually did open. Shortly afterwards a staff member arrived to join the one already waiting, and they disappeared inside without a word. More time passed before they eventually opened the front door. Once inside, I attempted to make a purchase, only to be told by a surly staff member "Well the till's not ready yet, you'll have to wait". No apology given, no explanation given, nothing. More time passed and so I asked how long it would take until they were ready to serve: "A couple more minutes" came the surly and abrupt reply. Again, no apology. The queue at the till was 5 deep now, as more people joined the wait. Ironically, when we were served there was a sign asking for a review, so here I am. I know it's not the staff's fault that they are only paid from 9am (I assume), but having been in this situation myself, a bit of courtesy goes a long way. An explanation and perhaps letting people know that they're welcome to come in but you won't be ready to serve for, say, 20 minutes, would go along way to manage expectations. And of course an apology for keeping people waiting never goes astray. The gifts inside were lovely, but unfortunately the visit was ruined by the surly staff who to all appearances didn't like working there. I would go elsewhere to the many other shops with the same or similar items throughout MR.

Dear Kez K, I am really sorry to hear that our team opened late on the day of your visit. This failure was completely on us. Ample time is provided to prepare for the opening time of 9am and holidaymakers like yourselves are often ready to roll and make the most of their day. Unfortunately we have had to use your disappointing experience as an example in our training programs of why it is vital to allow extra travel time to get to work in school holidays or high season. We are lucky in that we don't often have much practice with traffic. As you say some courtesy or an apology would have gone a long way in this instance.
Thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback so we have opportunity to improve in this area.

The Visitor Centre is excellent and the staff most helpful. However, the town itself is really lacking. We were there last week for 4 nights and found it very hard to find somewhere to have a coffee after 1.30-2pm each day. Most cafes had closed for the day or about to close and had their kitchens closed. Even some restaurants at night were closing their kitchens early. We know that many had a shortage of staff, but most holiday makers, I'm sure would be happy to wait a little longer.
The town was packed with holiday makers and we thought businesses would be happy to stay open. Disappointed.

Hi 602oliveb
Thanks for the great feedback about our visitor centre team.
Yes most cafes are open early morning to about 2pm for lunch or coffee but there are a handful of places that will still serve after that time. We are very much a daylight orientated region so our definition of a late dinner or night out is a little different to the big smoke I'm afraid. It can take some getting used to.
My suggestion for next visit is to frequent the town centres in the morning (for cafes, galleries or retail therapy) and return of an evening for an apres drink or dinner. We find that most visitors are generally out and about exploring beautiful beaches, ancient caves or stunning vineyards and cellar doors of an afternoon. With all the fresh and salty sea air surrounding us on three sides, we are often tuckered out by 9pm 😴
You are correct though, like much of regional Australia we have continued to battle through staffing and shortages so many of our small family businesses cope by making sure they are open or servicing visitors at the times of highest demand. Thanks for your understanding and I hope the above tips help navigate our quirks for next visit.

My wife and I contacted your office to make an accommodation booking for a 5 night stay, we were told "the office was busy at the moment and we will ring you back"............we are still waiting!!!!! Thats the first black mark. We eventually made our own accomm., booking and have just returned to Perth after a forgettable Margaret River experience. The townsite is like a war zone and detour signage is lacking, how the hell an interstate or oversees visitor would cope with the directions God only knows, Covid saved you lots of grumblings here, Black mark number2. The WA Tourism keep banging on about how do we get people to come to WA, well the secret is out, why would you bother. Good tourism is driven by committed and passionate people, these being the operators, they are thin on the ground in MR, examples are..........lots of restaurants closed, closed shops, grubby street presentation you could say 'down at the heel'. Tourism is a 24/7 365 day thing not a part time occupation. Black mark No3. We are back in Perth and our happy holiday memories are of those spent in France, England, Spain and NZ not Margaret River, sorry to have to tell you this. Regards Bob & Su Walton

See my review in Margaret River. Tourist bureau attendant tried to be helpful and did provide us with a list of ‘open’ wineries - list had no contact numbers, trying to get through to book was so difficult with many not answering and having full message bank, but most only offered takeouts or were booked out weeks in advance. Not worth visiting this area until everything reopens after 1st July !

Thank you for your review. I am sure you can understand that it has been a very difficult time keeping up with business's in the region and when they have reopened etc. I can advise that most of the business's are now open with the planned openings for the remaining business's in the next few weeks. We are always available to have a chat or welcome emails and telephone conversations where we might be able to help with contact numbers etc. We look forward to your return to the region.

If you're wanting to find out what to see around Margaret River then this is the place to visit. Also great for searching for accommodation.
Staff are helpful and friendly. There are lots of brochures available but best of all is the large, free map of the district. A treasure.
There are also some nice tourist-type bits and pieces for sale. My wife and I both bought great travel hats that survive being squashed into suitcases.

Looking at accommodation for 2 couples at Margaret River in July for 2 nights. Any suggestions?

If you have a car we really liked staying here a bit removed from it all but a 5 minute drive out to Surfer's Point and 10 minutes back to the main street in Margaret River. We loved being out in the quiet with beautiful wild flowers and even saw a kangaroo. With two couples you would each have a bedroom and that's the capacity of the B&B part (this woman converted her home to have two matching guest suites separate from her own home). She prepares a lovely breakfast as well! It's called "Bed n Breakfast from $190 a couple" on AirBnB.
