The area

Address
Neighborhood: St. Kilda
St. Kilda is an iconic beachside suburb and one of the most culturally and economically diverse of Melbourne’s neighborhoods. It is a traditional haven for musicians, artists and writers, drawn to the European ambience and fresh ocean breezes. At night, it can have an edgier side, but by day, it features a relaxed vibe – the market stalls, boutiques and outdoor bars display St. Kilda’s easygoing attitude. Ocean winds blow from Port Phillip Bay and waves lap onto its long and mostly deserted beaches. Rides whir at the world’s oldest operational Luna Park. On a lazy weekend morning, bikers cruise along Acland Street, showing off their motorcycles. But the late morning crowds are too busy at brunch to notice. St. Kilda is a perfect place to relax after a night out with friends.

A once thriving shopping precinct with amazing cake shops dating back decades is now a dead end haven for $2 shops and druggies. ST.kilda council blocked the street and since local can't park to buy cakes and traders are shutting. Shame on st.kilda bayside council

Went on a busy warm day with friends from overseas. Visited Luna Park which was ok. Then went to go out for dinner. How can a busy night in the lead up to Christmas 2 weeks away on a 28 degree day be dead? Street was dirty, half the shops closed and couldn't get a park and had to walk 25 mins each way with tired and hungry kids.
Well done to the council for killing off Acland street. Why would you bother visiting when it is so hard to get to? Gone are all the boutique shops and only the major store brands that can afford to stay there.
Apart from cafes/restaurants, not a variety of shops like there used to be. Why would you shop there when you can go down the road to where the road is not closed to cars and it is vibrant.
To be honest I was embarrassed to take our friends there and they even said it looks run down and prefer to go elsewhere.
Again another councils bad decision killed off a once great area

This area is a bit nicer than when we came in January of this year. Some new shops here. The cakes are overpriced and don’t look the freshest. But a pleasant place to walk. We got some Israeli items from Coles but Woolworths seem to have dropped their kosher section. You can take tram 96 back into town for a fun ride along the faster tracks.

I come from interstate. I was last here 5 years ago when it was crowded and dynamic. Today was a miserable experience. 80% of cafes were closed or abandoned. We found one open and we were the sole customers for brunch. On the tram home I could see the Fitzroy street precinct was the same.
I guess this is all the fault of the insane Covid lockdown. I can't see a way back.

Interesting enough to visit if you’re passing through, but certainly not worth visiting if you’re not in the area. The bakeries were not good and all seemed to offer very similar food. There were also quite a few young people out and about drinking. Not what I would call family friendly.

Interesting street in St Kilda. Lots of cake shops - if staying for a few days one could try them all.
Plenty of other shops as well as places to eat, but the number of cake shops was quite amazing and they all looked great!

Walking the street is a pleasure. So many little cake shop/bakeries with the best selection and quality of cakes, tarts and rolls. Plus a wide range of indoor/ outdoor eatieries. Great place to start your day

Acland Street St.Kilda has had a change of face over the past couple of years.. it has now been turned into a mall with trams through it to the closure at Barkley St,.. I personally preferred the way it was as a village bustling with crowds & many famous cake shops. Times have changed her face, however she still bustles on warm days with cafes, shops & restraunts galore with clean beaches gardens, Luna Park & many other tourist attractions make this a tourist haven. Worth a visit to soak up the atmosphere with tall palms gracing her sidewalks & beaches! Enjoy..

Having lived in St Kilda 12 years ago, I like to come back here. But I find Acland Street is really grubby now and overrated. The cake shops looked tired and the stock in the window was dry. I didn't buy anything...

I've been coming here for years and years and years. Yes I'm old. It's an iconic part of Melbourne. I lived in an apartment on Beaconsfield Parade and we'd wander down here for brunch or dinner or whatever.
It's evolved over time and today it's a hive of activity with hipsters and groovers and families and everyone in between.
Unfortunately there is a Macca's just on the corner which detracts from the place.
Food - what do you feel like? Because this place has everything. Bring your dog as they are welcome.
Wheelchair or disabled people can easily get around as it's flat and the shops and cafes accommodate.
Parking can be a pain so I suggest you park up where the market is held on a Sunday. The eclectic group of shops and stores are great and if you walk further around into some of the other streets, you'll find even more treasure.
When you've finished exploring, cross the road and let your toes run through the sandy beach of St. Kilda.
