About
Here the story of wool is brought to life - told by those who lived it and through the sights and the sounds of heritage machines weaving carpets and knitting socks. Here the smell of lanolin fills the air, fresh fleece beckons your touch and the authentic surrounds of the shearing shed immerse you in the Australian wool story. The National Wool Museum experience is more than just wool. Here history, science, fashion, handcraft and art come together. Here temporary exhibitions and programs combine learning, exploration and entertainment. Here you can find the finest woollens, learn a traditional craft, explore our region's heritage and maybe even come fate-to-face with creatures from our past. Today the National Wool Museum is one of Australia's cultural treasures - as a cultural heritage destination for visitors and community.

This was a most interesting museum. I expected to just spend 30 minutes here, but 2 hours later and I had to be dragged away lol.

A convenient Museum close to the centre of town with fantastic displays of yesteryear. The Museum gift shop is well stocked with quality gifts.

Walking in history

What an experience! What great nostalgia! The history in this place is very impressive. When we finished our tour we enjoyed a great coffee in the downstairs cafe.

Fascinating museum, particularly if you have been living in Australia for most of your life. I never knew how much the wool museum impacted the success of Australia as a country. Staff here are great. Will answer all your questions. The old rug machine (sorry I forgot the name) was great to see in action.

Family friendly

Good hour or so for kids. There was an urban playground downstairs for the youngsters, a little bit like scienceworks.
The rest was a well maintained and displayed museum.
Worth a visit, but be careful about the opening hours as they are very short.

Friendly staff

This is exactly what this place is....a wool museum. Not much else. My first time ever going to this type of museum. I was very lucky as I had arrived at 2.30pm and didn't realise it shuts at 3. This girl at the counter was kind and let me in for free. I was very appreciative to that.

I was shocked that on the top level was a picture exhibition which added something else to the museum... a nice touch. Very minimal stairs.. as the floors are connected by ramps, makes walking a little easier. Parking wasn't too bad for a busy Geelong day. At the gift shop there is Geelong's visitor information centre - which is an odd place to have it.

Would defiantly recommend this place on a hot day.... minutes walk from the pier and beach

Well worth a look

Spent 2 hours here - mainly down to the friendly, knowledgeable staff. With Covid restrictions half of the exhibit areas were closed. But the axminster carpet weaving machine was fascinating

Spatious and very interesting museum
Feb 2020
This museum is dedicated to the hostory of wool. It is well laid out over several floors. It also occasionaly has extra exhibits - for example the World Wildlife Photography Exhibit in February 2020. There is a good book and souvenir shop, and information centre with lots of information on Geelong activities. Well worthe a visit.

Worth a visit

Interesting museum in one of the former wool factory buildings. Very informative - working jacquard weaving machine operated periodically throughout the day and the operator (a former employee) very knowledgeable about his subject. Various wool-related machines on display, at least one of which is 'hands on'. Informative about the wool industry and its history in Australia.

Incredibly fascinating museum - highlights all the wool history of the area including very good videos and installations - also happened to see the National Photography Exhibition which was excellent. Well worth a visit if in the area.
