Fascinating attraction that stretches all the way along Sturt St.It’s stretch of parkland which encompasses 13 blocks of Sturt Street's central divider. Discover the many fascinating monuments and ornamental garden beds, taking in views of Ballarat's grand 19th century architecture along the way.

The Sturt Street Gardens run up the middle of the road from Grenville Street all the way to Pleasant Street, covering an area of 7.1 acres.

The park is filled with historically significant monuments, memorials, bandstands and trees, and is a fascinating and educational place to take walk.

It could be improved with pedestrian crossing connecting each segment instead of walkers having to hazard each crossing

Sturt St was laid out in 1851, shortly after the discovery of gold in Ballarat. The Sturt Street Gardens run east-west and take up 7 acres (2.8 ha). The Gardens contain many wonderful statues, ancient and modern. There are also several historic bandstands. A stroll from beginning to end will take around an hour. The Gardens are regarded as being the centre of this historic gold mining town

Like other reviewers, we were more impressed by the facades and buildings. Sturt Street is one of the prettiest streets in Australia with buildings that are still impressive after so many years. Thankfully , most have surprised although you only cringe at some buildings (such as which bank) and wonder what was there before.

Hi Ron, Ballarat is fortunate to have such impressive facades and buildings. Quite a few old verandahs have been replaced in more recent times, adding to the ambience. The bank building you refer to was a replacement bank building, built prior to historic overlays being applied to much of the city. Thanks for your review, regards, Rosie

When in Ballarat, a walk up the Sturt Street gardens is always a delight. Something that is often overlooked and taken for granted by the locals. Great forsight in the 1800's

Sturt St Gardens are a unique feature of Ballarat.
They are a legacy of the need for wide streets to accomodate the turning of bullock carts to service the huge population surge of the Ballarat Goldfields in the mid 1850s, well into the 1860s.
They reflect the heritage of a Victorian City, with statues of Queen Victoria, Robert Burns and a couple of terrific bandstands, including one that was built as a memorial to the band who died when the Titanic sank. The Sturt St Gardens, in good weather, provide a lovely outdoor respite for locals and tourists alike, to enjoy a spot of lunch or relax a while!
Hard to miss if you are visiting Ballarat!

Along the centre of Sturt St. the gardens are really lovely-quite narrow in places but plenty of seating along the footpath beside and plenty of interesting statues and fountains to check out. A great place to view some of the lovely old buildings along Sturt St too.
