It is a must do while in Ballarat to stroll down the street and look at fantastic examples of 1850's to 1880's architecture. The facades are fantastic and only go to show that Ballarat in the boom times would have been one of the most bustling cities in Australia. Most are heritage listed so is great to see that they... Ballarat is proud of it's history & heritage which dates back prior to the gold rush of 1851. I believe that Lydiard Street is our best showcase as it has a large number of heritage commercial & residential buildings that not only demonstrates the wealth of the region at that time but also how well the heritage has been preserved.... The entertainment precinct of Ballarat - features the Art Gallery, Regent Cinema, Her Majesty's Theatre, several hotels and cafes (including the recently renovated and exceedingly beautiful The Provincial Hotel opposite the historic Ballarat Railway Station which features Refreshment Rooms) and many other unique heritage buildings.

The architecture alone on this street is marvelous and warrants a visit just on that point alone. I walked along it on a Sunday when many shops were closed however it allowed me to admire the buildings without all the bustle of people and traffic. The Ballarat art gallery is on this street near the gold exchange. You really feel... More

Recommend you get a self guided brochure of this historic area from the Information Bureau and you won't be disappointed. So many buildings to look at and most in very good condition. You can even have a peek inside the Theatre which is worth doing. We have done it all before but still enjoy revisiting this area.

What a beautiful view it was to see the lovely heritage buildings compared to them in the bright summer light. It doesn't matter what time of the day or year you see these buildings it would be hard not to appreciate the workmanship placed into building these. They are so well maintained. What makes these even more special is that... More
