We stopped in at Howitt Park along a trip into Lakes Entrance.
For both a picnic and a trip down memory lane.
Although the park now has upgraded facilities including toilet blocks, upgraded BBQ’s, shade sales among others, the original flying fox and slide are still here, even though they have changed and improved.
Even the strolls we did along the Mitchell River it seems, has now become a tourist feature as the “Mitchell River Walk”.
It is still a great family park, and still provides a peaceful rest stop.

Oodles of parking here ... even for boats and caravans. There are bathrooms that are well kept .
But why stop at this park ? Well for many reasons ...the playground is looked after ... the views are stunning... there is a huge slide ... aboriginal significance ( stop and read about the tree) ... clean amenities... cafe nearby ... BBQ areas ... did I mention the slide ???!!

Howitt park playground is good for older kids as it has a flying fox, BIMx track and the big slide that goes down the hill. There are tables and chairs to sit down and enjoy a meal while the kids play. It is not fenced so smaller kids need supervision as it is on the main road and the river is off the park.

Been stopping here for years to break the drive from Melbourne to Lakes/Orbost/Marlo.
It’s changed a little over the years but still represents a great opportunity to stretch the legs and let the kids run around.
Plenty of play equipment including the long yellow slide and flying fox.
Shaded area for picnic lunch.

We stopped because we saw the "yellow slide" on the on-line map. The yellow slide was pretty fun for the kids. For some reason, we were attracted to "Bill's Horse Trough" as well, which is located by the entrance to the park on the north side of the highway and the history is explained in the covered gazebo area. Lots of rowers were setting up in the river.

This is a great stop to get out and let the kids run around. They have a really long slide and they have a couple of jungle gyms and a zip line. Well worth the stop on a nice day.

Perfect park for kids to run around, flying fox, big slide & lots of other climbing frames, etc. It was a good spot when on a long drive (cafe nearby) to stretch the legs, allow kids to run around & re-load with a quick lunch / coffee.

We have stopped over here quite often. The kids have always liked the top level to bottom level enclosed slide. The toilets are always well cared for and there is plenty of parking.

Howitt Park has a wonderful park which is great for the kids but it has so much more. The Aboriginal Canoe Tree is a wonderful sight to see. There are so few left as trees get old and fall over, get burnt or cut down with development. It is wonderful to stand and imagine what life would have been like for the first inhabitants of this land. So much culture and heritage.
