Visited Launceston for 3 nights and damn glad to get out of here, just to get some sleep. Those bells chime all through the night and destroy any notion of sleep. I get the charm during the daytime but seriously, at night too? Will never be back and will also be recommending to friends contemplating a night or 3 in Launceston not to visit either. Our hotel has tried to alleviate the noise pollution through acoustic window treatment but doesn't stop the incredibly loud bells. Good way though to destroy your tourism industry.

This is a lovely old building and to be admired from afar. DO NOT stay anywhere near it. The clock strikes on the quarter hour 24/7 and even though we stayed about 2klm away with double glazing it was still vaguely audible. Might be an idea to turn the clock chimes off form 11pm to 7am???

Was in Launceston for a meeting, flew in to Hobart from Melbourne and drove up to Launceston for the day.

My iwatch had been playing up ever since I bought it on eBay three weeks earlier so, of course it had to stop working altogether just before my meeting.

My meeting was at 2.10pm. I finished licking the teaspoon that came with my double shot, skim, choc, late at the old Antique Cafe when I heard a great chime ring-out over Launceston. 'it can't be time yet' I thought to myself and popped my now clean teaspoon on the side of the saucer.

But, to my surprise once the nonsense cacophony of jumbled bells settled down, I heard the sound of one, then a second pronounced, single bell being struck, signalling two o' clock precisely. I pride myself on never being tardie when and where ever possible.

So it was, with quite some embarrassment I whistled at the boy to come over and take his money because I needed to be on my way. Unfortunately he was not at all like my new second favourite, megalithic time keeper, and was nowhere to do his simple job.

I returned the $5 note I had readied back in my snatch purse and headed, on time, to my meeting.

What a wonderful clock.
And if you are wondering which is my favourite megalithic, housed time piece, it is, of course London's, Big Ben.

This clock was right near our hotel, it chimes all night which makes for a very poor sleep. The clock needs to be silenced between the hours of 9pm-7pm so that everyone can have a decent nights rest.

This excellent clock tower with a lovely century old clock is in an area worth spending a few minutes. The post office has a further heritage building, the beautiful town hall, directly opposite and civic square alongside is worth a look. There are some additional heritage buildings nearby, plus the old umbrella shop is just around the corner. And look out for the lovely statues on the front of the building on the corner.

This little baby is a standout. Our hotel provided ear plugs, but we just loved the regular bells and they did not intrude but added a real atmosphere to the town.

As far as clocks go, this one fits right in amongst the "heavy hitters" of the world. When you think of clocks, your mind might concur up images of massive structures, towering over a metropolis and sending out hammered reminders to the masses. This is no Elizabeth Tower, let's face it. It certainly lacks the grandeur of the Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel in Saudi Arabia but what does it matter? On a still evening its comforting chimes can be heard all over the city, telling everyone they're in safe hands when it comes to keeping track of the day.

Unless you are stuck in a time warp and do not own a phone nor a watch, this is the attraction for you, when you are sick of estimating what the time is.

How this was rated as an "attraction" is beyond me - it's is just an old clock of some historical significance which is not worth the 5 minutes of my life the hotel I was staying at robbed me off to make the effort to go and see it.

Being a visitor to Launceston, we were amazed to hear the chimes from the beautiful town clock. It is rare to still hear the chimes and it bought back some lovely memories

Its easy to walk past and miss the exquisite delights of this tower with its intricate detail, historic significance and domination of the streetscape. Photographers need time to dwell on several angles that will reward you with impressive results
