If you are into design, this is a great find in the centre of Launie. When we visited they had some beautiful displays of Tasmanian wooden furniture, a collection of unusual handmade wooden instruments and a great little gift shop showcasing work of some of the local and Tassie craftsmen and women - ranging from ceramics and wooden pieces to clothing, jewellery and glassware. The also hold events - one of the musical instrument makers was due to hold a concert on the afternoon we visited. Well worth a visit.

The Design Centre is close to the town centre, right next to City Park and its monkeys. And it's much more stimulating that the monkeys! The items on display are made by Tasmanian artisans from Tasmanian raw materials. There was a large room displaying beautiful and highly original items of furniture, and another that showcased musical instruments. There are items for sale, mostly wooden but also pottery and jewellery. All the rooms, including in the retail area, are beautifully set out. You leave feeling better about the world - good design can have that effect, I've found.

Happily the Centre was located near my hotel, I love the old and new style of the building and also adore timber!
I was told they were preparing for the current exhibition so got to see the permanent one only. There are stunning timber pieces from chairs to sofas to a drum. Apparently, every year there is a new addition to the collection. All those gorgeous trees found in Tasmania make very special furniture.
I was impressed with the shop too showcasing Tasmanian designs in timber and jewellery.
Staff are helpful, entry free but donation helps.
I will return and cannot recommend the place highly enough!

Modern design, creative and utilising local timber. Not many people seem to know about it however I think it was a hidden gem in Launceston. Free entry (however they can do with donations). The quality was first class. Beautifully crafted and engineered. There was a guest craftsman the day we were there and this was a bonus. The staff or volunteers were extremely helpful and full of knowledge and product wisdom. Roomy open display areas as behests a quality Gallery. Beautiful park next door with magnificent trees. Easy access, however parking was a bit of a challenge - don’t be afraid to walk a little way. Well worth a priority visit.

This place used to be so good. It had the best Tasmanian furniture and I used to send all my visitors there. But I don't know what has happened to it. Now it's full of cheap Asian clothes, craft-fair jewellery and Harvey Norman furniture. They've really gone downhill. The museum collection is still OK except for all the little tourist tat they've added recently. They need to lift their game.

While we appreciate feedback both good and bad, I reserve the right to consider your assessment of the current product offering in the shop is far from correct and misleading. The cheap clothing you refer to is made in North West Tasmania from Tasmanian Merino wool, the fabric is made in NZ (Australia sold of our capacity to do this in the 1970's) and is a premium product respected the world over. Its a combination of craft, design and innovation we should all be proud to call Tasmanian. As for the furniture, things have changed over the years and no longer are a number of the artisan pieces available. This is the side effect of people typically not buying them and therefore these talented makers were not able to make their living from such extraordinary works and have moved on. We still work with leading makers on a range of furniture that is ultimately more saleable and still the best representation of the capacity currently in Tasmania. And yes we have an entry fee for the collection and exhibition galleries, we aways have had since the building opened, over recent years it was via donation but this had to be changed as the drop in revenue was significant enough for us to consider closing the galleries on certain days. We decided that a small entry fee of $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and free for students was very reasonable for the experience offered. We can't be everything to everyone yet we must remain flexible and resilient, to look to the future and not the past. Things are different and we have responded to what is happening now in Tasmania.

Recent name change to Design Tasmania Centre. Entry is now by donation.

Mens Shed and Woodworkers' Association members must visit, to see truly exquisite and innovative craftsmanship. Several large display rooms, all with wall panel heating that take time to warm up, so don't visit first thing in the morning if you feel the cold.

Also be careful with backpacks as some of the pieces are located quite close to each other and a bump could prove very expensive. Currently no cloakroom but you can leave backpacks etc with the front desk.

I'd think twice about visiting with little kids in tow. There are a couple of items set aside for kids to touch and pick up but the rest of the exhibits are strictly no-touch although not protected by any barriers.

And remember to look up, as even the ceiling is a work of wood art.

This attraction is located adjacent to the City Park Radio historical radio museum and studios (also entry by donation), so tour both in the one visit but allow at least an hour maybe two.

As always, if you have found this review helpful please click the Yes button as it encourages me to continue putting effort into thorough reviews.

Delightful, informative staff member at the front desk. A small charge to view the extraordinary exhibits - some of the best designed tables and desks I have ever seen. So special to see creative functional design exhibited. Glass artistry also well represented. Visit and marvel at the local talent.

A wonderful place to see amazing designs using local materials. Worth a visit and as it is located next to City Park you can stroll there afterwards.

We found this to be an inspiring place for craft. The wood products are second to none, and although the producers goods can be found elsewhere on the island, we found the pricing competitive. There is also a very attractive range of jewellery and clothes.
The larger pieces of furniture were wonderful.
