About
Some of the most loved (and most photographed!) features of Toowoomba’s street scape are the more than 80 large scale street art murals dotted throughout the city. The amazing works are thanks to the First Coat International Art Festival that has brought nationally and internationally recognised outdoor artists to Toowoomba over many years. Grab your camera and wander through our streets and lanes to see how these once blank spaces have been brought to life by dozens of talented artists. Be sure to also check out the First Coat Artist Studio Space and Indoor Gallery run by the team behind organising this festival - based at 6 Laurel Street Toowoomba.

I only recently experienced the First Coat Outdoor Gallery due to geocaching taking me to over a dozen of the art pieces in a multi-site geocache. Exploring these little alleys and streets was fun and I honestly had no idea there were quite so many murals! I will be taking my teenage daughter on a tour soon, as she is enjoying art and I am sure will be inspired by these.

The art work on show in Toowoomba is amazing. The walk around town to find it is an adventure in itself. I have lived here for over 2 years but until I had friends from the US visit I had not actually taken the time to find all the out of the way art pieces on offer.
They were amazed as was I, not only st the art but the cool little shops we found along the way just of the beaten track so to say.
Download the app and enjoy.

A great way to enjoy a walk around our city. There are around thirty to fifty of these wonderful pieces dotted around our CBD. They are not hard to find as they are on the grand scale of things they adorn many walls and laneways. A short walk down Ruthven St will reward you. You can also get maps with directions to many of the paintings from the Visitor information centre

Toowoomba now has a wonderful range of street murals. Many of them are tucked away in back alleys and are best seen at night. I would not explore these on my own for this reason but go with a friend at night. Of course in the day there is no problem but often cars are blocking views. There are plenty of other murals in plain sight in more public areas. Some murals are exquisitely detailed while others very basic. I definitely recommend looking up the first coat website and finding out exactly where each mural is before you start exploring as it's easy to miss them. I think they are a terrific asset to the city!

Toowoomba has an amazing collection of street art - a must see. The street art here is like Melbourne but much more manageable.

All around the CBD you'll find murals painted as part of a festival.
They are all very different and painted by talented artisans. pick up the guide as it gives you a precis of the artist and their painting.

Once upon a time Toowoomba was a fairly average regional town, then it got art and became a little bit spectacular.

The First Coat artworks add so much vibrancy to the streetscape and an array of great eateries and cool little cafes have popped up around them in the alleys and lanes. So there's lots of places where you can relax, indulge and enjoy the murals interwoven through the heritage facades without going to too much effort or if you have a more adventurous spirit, you can strap on your boots and do the full gallery tour which is quite extensive.

Many of the artists are significant in their field and the work is top quality. The street art has become iconic to Toowoomba and the locals all have their favourite piece. The First Coat App makes it easy to find the artworks if you want to plan a tour of the outdoor gallery (we also picked up a paper tour guide from the curators at Kontraband Studios in 6 Laurel St), otherwise you can just take a stroll around the streets and find mural masterpieces looming large and creative in some surprising spaces.
