A 4-star rating might seem a bit generous: After all, the museum is quite small, open only on Wednesdays and Sundays, staffed primarily by volunteers, and includes a few ordinary displays inside. But, upon closer inspection, especially out the back, the museum offers some unique insights into Illawarra during the early years.
Outside are a series of rooms or spaces, each replete with fascinating artefacts around a particular theme. For example, these spaces include an air raid shelter, a blacksmith’s shop, a stockman’s hut, a laundry, and horse drawn vehicles. The artefacts that adorn these spaces, including ploughs, surreys, and a range of other implements, vehicles, and objects, are each labelled and described, in some depth, on a separate display. Some of these narratives are intriguing. Inside are also various rooms, with furnishings and objects from previous decades, coupled with some interesting panoramic photos of Wollongong over the years as well.
The museum is housed in a building that was the first telegraph and post office in the area. The staff that man the desk are friendly and informative as well.

We visited this museum late last year, and loved it. I LIVE in this town, and had not seen it for about 36 years!! We had our 8 yr old granddaughter with us, who was intrigued with the class room. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Goes to show that we also need to look closer to home, sometimes!

From humble beginnings I have been pleasantly surprised on a recent visit just how this museum has grown and developed. The displays have grown to the extent the staff tell me some items have to be stored and brought out for particular themed displays.
The only shame is that the opening hours are limited.
If you like history, especially local history, this museum is definitely worth the visit.

I've taken groups of Cub Scouts (8-11) to this museum a couple of times, and they've always enjoyed learning about Wollongong's early settled history. The curators have put a lot of effort into presenting the building "as it was" and really do set the scene for what life was like for our pioneering forefathers/mothers.

Having not been to the museum for a while I was pleasantly surprised to see how it has grown and the number of exhibits on display. The original building is the same but exhibits have grown outside. They change due to the growing number of those available It has a strong local flavour and well worth a visit'
Lovely park, beach, shops, pubs and restaurants nearby.

This museum is small but the information is great. It shows the history of the Wollengong with the guide is perfect. They explained everything. There are many display and photos for you to enjoy. Entrance fee is $4 which is reasonable.

Not as much actual history of Wollongong as I expected. My partner thought we were going to a 'real' museum and had planned several hours for the site. That was my fault for not expressing that it was a tiny, local place. All in all, the staff was friendly and it had a pleasant presentation. Not really worth the time though ... all 15 minutes of the 'day' that it took to see it.

Only open for limited hours, this museum has a well curated and presented range of artefacts and material covering the history of the Illawarra district and social aspects. Free entry and well worth a visit for anyone interested in history of the area.
