- Hawkeye4077Maitland, Australia544 contributionsHunter Valley - more than wineA very nice way to explore something other than wine in the Hunter Valley. Take the time to try some of the guns, vodkas and liquors on offer. Popcorn flavoured liqueur tastes so wonderful going down but so did the Mystery Gin and Chilli Vodka.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 5, 2024
- SallyC37 contributionsA fun experienceMy husband and I went there due to a recommendation from family. It is a cool building. We did the test tube tasting (easy to book online) and Blayde was a great host. We enjoyed tasting the gin, vodka and liqueur. We bought a bottle of the delicious caramel vodka.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 9, 2024
- JaykannAirlie Beach, Australia529 contributionsBest gin experienceBest gin tasting experience. The lady was polite and answered all my questions. Get to try six samples for just $5 which is worth visiting. Mystery gin was my favorite out of everything. Interesting were coffee vodka, popcorn liqueur. I have tried lychee and hazelnut from other brands before however Hunter distillery was interesting.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 21, 2024
- Toni SRaymond Terrace, Australia3 contributionsTest tube tastings to tantalise your taste-buds!I took my friend from the US to the Hunter Distillery for a tasting experience and we weren’t disappointed. Our host(ess) was lovely and because we visited mid week it was quiet so there was time to sit and chat with the staff. The Gin, Vodka and Liquor flavours we tasted 🧪🧪🧪 were delicious but both of us agreed the Popcorn flavoured Vodka was our favourite! Thank you Hunter Distillery we enjoyed our time with you and would have no hesitation in recommending you to others visiting the area.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 8, 2024
- emmdee9Sydney, Australia68 contributionsHunter Distillery tasting 👌Visited today with my daughter. The lovely Craig took us to the tasting area as the lovely Mark was on a call. We chatted for a while till Mark came over. We asked if we could share a tasing as my daughter and I are lightweights when it comes to spirits. Mark was very accommodating. 6 test tubes are sat infront of you as you make a selection from the gins, liqueurs and vodkas. Both of us tasted each one as Mark gave us a description of what we were trying and how to use it with mixers. We had a few laughs as the alcohol got to us just a little. He even shared a dad joke 😄 Was a fun experience. Mark, Craig and Liam were so friendly which made the experience a good one. We went home with lychee liqueur and chocolate vodka 😋 Can definitely recommend 👌Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 16, 2024

We were on a tour bus where our last stop was the hunter distillery, we were a tame group and wandered in once we got of the bus.
We were greeted by a staff member who didn’t want a bar of us until we were presented to him by our bus driver like we were school children.
We understand that due to new laws there are restrictions on amounts of people indoors at once, but it was the wrong way to go about it.
When our driver came in he continued to go off at her about it, maybe just put up some signage or let the local tour companies know to avoid the severe awkwardness between two businesses who are merely helping/ supporting each other during this unusual and uncertain time of the virus.
He then changed his tune once we were shown our table and he started his show in the tasting. He was funny and light hearted during the tasting but we had now a bad impression from the first meeting.
We understand everyone is stressed right now with the uncertainty of small business due to the virus - trust me I’m one of them.
We loved all the flavors, and the chilli vodka is a must try. We brought a few of our favourite flavors to take home.

I really had high hopes for the tasting at the distillery. Very disappointed. None of the alcohol was really explained I.e. how it was made, how you would use it in cocktails or mixers etc. we could hardly hear the guy that was doing the tasting and to be honest other than the gin the rest of the alcohol was average. For the price there are plenty of other local distilleries in NSW with better gin, vodka and liqueurs.

The positive reviews encouraged us to visit but I was disappointed. Whilst quirky I was not a fan of the test tubes and the tastings were rushed (even though there wasn't a big crowd of people). Costs $5 pp to try up to 10 x 2mL of spirits. Did have a broad range available so if you like a variety of spirits this might be good value for you.

We were really looking forward to visiting this distillery, being the "OG" of the Hunter Valley as we were told - we did have high expectations. Unfortunately the service was terrible. The young guy who conducted the tasting opened with "Apologies, I'm really tired today" and continued the tasting with as much personality as a spoon. We tried our best to make conversation with him but it felt as though he didn't want to be there.
The gin, vodka and liqueurs themselves were varied and we probably would have enjoyed them more had we been informed more about how they were made or what went into each flavour - very disappointing experience and would not recommend.

Didn’t find the experience fulfilling. The inside of the building lacked personality and I was unsure what effect they were going for with the tables and chairs.
The chap looking after us was nice but was a bit like the building!!!!
I don’t find different flavoured spirits to be inspiring at all. With the gins there were subtle differences between each one, but just favouring schnapps with butterscotch, mango, strawberry or popcorn is just a stock standard flavoured drink.
A lot of people were there enjoying themselves and that added to a nice atmosphere, but I think they were aiming low with trying flavoured spirits from small test tubes that had no character.
The 3 gins on offer were nice.

Great atmosphere and the guys serving know their stuff and great sellers. Tasting in test tubes is cute and taste testing price is very reasonable. Popcorn liquor is another level.

We booked a tasting and communication via email was timely.
The "test tube" tastings of yur choice of spirits cost a very reasonable $5.
What let the venue down was a less than passionate explanation by our female server. Seemed to be just going through the motions.
I wasnt a fan of the mystery gin.
Venue has a lot of potential.

Great local distillery with a wide range of gins, vodkas and liqueurs. For a fee of $5 you can enjoy tasting of five different samples of your choice from a wide menu. Unfortunately this is not refunded if you make a purchase at the end which we did. Nevertheless it was an informative and enjoyable experience.

I would like to make it very clear that we were late to our booking, probably 15min. We hung outside for quite some time/and around the bench where we were going to be doing our tasting (a little aimlessly) without being wrangled by staff to sit so they could start. The lady who greeted us and took some pictures for us was lovely. She noted we were late and Saturday’s are very full on (back to back booking) so they would need to push us through - no problem form us as we had other stops. The gentleman that did the tasting, however, repeatedly mentioned how late we were and made comments which brought down the whole vibe - this wasn’t needed. We were told at 20 to, that we had 5 minutes to wrap up because they had to clean in preparation for the next group. So many people in our group commented through the day about how unpleasant the distillery was. Several also commented that they would have made a purchase had they not have had the experience that they had (they enjoyed the actual spirits) but not being made to feel the way they did. Unsure if we will return again at this point.

We had made a booking and it is one place you should give a go in the hunter valley mainly known for wines but this was great. We were shown at least 8 flavoured guns and 6 vodkas. Who knew there was so much to chose from and different ways to use vodka.
Would recommend a visit

group of 5 staying at pokolbin next weekend. do we need to book to taste at the distillery?
Written October 6, 2017
As I went with a large group we did call to let them know we were coming ahead, but 5 people should be fine. (Just check that they are open when you plan to go).
Enjoy the tasting!
