About
For nearly thirty years Pepper Tree has been a beacon for quality wine in the heart of Hunter wine country. Founded in 1991 it continues to flourish as one of the stalwart wine companies of the region. The Pepper Tree Cellar Door provides a picturesque and quintessential Hunter Valley wine experience Pepper Tree started with a focus on grapes from the Hunter Valley but today the roots run deep for owner John Davis with vineyard sites in four premium wine growing regions across Australia. Almost three decades on, Pepper Tree is making consistently great wines, drawing on these vineyards situated in the Hunter and Orange in NSW to prized patches of soil in Coonawarra and Wrattonbully in South Australia. You could say it’s the best of four worlds. Our Commitment to the four regions in which John Davis has invested so much of his time and expertise in are the driving force behind all we do. The Hunter Valley represents us but the roots of the tree spread through all four regions.

    Excellent, warm and welcoming
We had an amazing experience for our wine tasting. Shaz was excellent talking us through all the wines, different grapes and also giving some other recommendations for the rest of our trip. I left with sheets of recommendations and of course a bag full of wine and goodies. I’d highly recommend this place for its welcome and friendliness, probably the best tasting that we did in the few days we were at Hunter Valley.
Hi Greyo, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback! We're so glad your tasting experience with Shaz was enjoyable. We will be sure to pass on this feedback. We hope you're enjoying your wines, and we hope you'll visit us next time you're in the Hunter Valley. Thanks again!

A first rate wine tasting experience
A first rate wine tasting experience. We rolled up at 5pm on 31st August and the young lady who was running things could not have been more charming. We sampled many wines and browsed their other products ending up buying a very individual decanter. I don't know how many wines we were given to try but they were generous in the number of offerings and in the individual quantities. Overall a lovely experience Would I go there again? Yes mist definitely
Hi Z8475AErichardp, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review for our winery. We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your experience, and your service by our Cellar Door team was memorable. We do hope you pop in to our Cellar Door again next time you're in the Valley! All the best, PTW team

    Tailored service. Excellent Shiraz .
Attended to by Shaz who customised the tasting to preference even though she was busy serving other groups. Was very patient and knowledgeable and gave thoughtful advice. Loved their premium Shiraz and got two bottles even tho I usually prefer cab sav. Really enjoyed the visit !
Hi Jacflashed, Thank you for your review! We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your tasting experience, and found the service to be attentive. We will be sure to pass on this feedback and we hope to welcome you to our cellar door again soon.

    Lovely spot.
We popped in here for a glass of wine. I can only handle one tasting a day before they seem to run together. We had a lovely glass of wine outside The estate is intimate and the setting is lovely. There is accommodation and an award winning restaurant in the property. Worth a visit.
Hi 722kylieg, Thank you for leaving your feedback - we're glad to hear you enjoyed your time on the grounds of Pepper Tree. We hope to see you again soon.

We booked a pre-paid tasting as required in a post-Covid opening during the holidays. Firstly it appeared that we were silly to do so, as we were treated no differently from people walking in unannounced. The young guy behind the bar was very disengaged and uninterested. His attitude was quite surly, and first thinking it was us, it appeared he was little interested in anyone else. The dribble of wine you were given made it impossible to make any assessment of it’s worth, so we left without buying.
The last time here a different front of service led to an enjoyable time and the purchase of many wines. This guy costs them business.

Pepper Tree is a beautiful property, also with lovely country gardens to walk around, with a chicken coop as well. My husband, myself and another couple did a wine tasting there, however, while the wines were good, our host seemed grumpy and very uninterested in talking to us. He gave very little information about each wine and was half walking away as he finished his last sentence. Very disappointing. The other couple who were sitting on the other side of the bar had a better host, who seem enthused about doing his job. If you are on a tight budget, this winery offers $5 per person wine tasting at bar.

This place is absolutely stunning. Lush gardens and backdrops for photos. It been well kept and had lots of time invested into it. The lady who served us for our wine tasting was lovely and knowledgeable. We brought 4 bottles of wine and then later returned to find you can buy these bottles in Dan Murphy’s for $11 cheaper after being told its not something you can purchase outside of the winery so taking advantage has lowered my score.

Hi 155kerriep, Thank you for the review. We do take a great deal of pride in our winery and surroundings, so our customers like yourselves can enjoy! I am unsure as to why you can find our Cellar Door only wines in Dan Murphy's, we have a range of wines we specifically make for wholesale that is not sold at our Cellar Door. Could you please email marketing@peppertreewines.com.au so we can look into for you. Thank You The Pepper Tree Team!

We had booked a private tasting for my father in-laws 70th on Saturday and Pepper Tree was to be a highlight for us. Unfortunately, our schedule had us running late and we unsuccessfully tried multiple times to call ahead as a courtesy.
When we arrived, we approached the outdoor reception area and was immediately yelled at from across the courtyard repeatedly not to go inside, when we had no intention of going inside. Once I explained we were late and apologized we were spoken down to and in an attempt to help be accommodating and get the most out of our remaining 20minutes there at the venue, I had asked perhaps we split the tasting, those that like white taste white and those that like red taste red, that did not appear to appease our server "Justin" either. We were seated and promptly poured a wine with little explanation, upon approaching our group for the second time with a wine to taste "Justin" then proceeded to explain that groups of people over 60 "are the worst" because they think they know everything about wine and are always drunk and annoying. Absolutely disgusting and tone deaf given we were celebrating a 70th and half the group was over 60. Very disappointing as it was meant to be a highlight, but we walked away very disappointed and upset. A very picturesque place but terrible terrible staff. Justin should be ashamed of himself and perhaps seek a different job if he can’t speak to customers properly.

My mother and I did a wine tasting over the June long weekend and were blown away by the outstanding wine and service. We would like to thank Dean for his hospitality and knowledge - he was a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend a visit and ask for Dean!

Consistent tasting wines, nice setting but the premium tasting with the cheese board was not good value. Staff were very busy, much less attentive than other wineries. Recommend to take the basic tasting.

Pepper Tree was the first stop of our wine tour and by far the best. We were hosted by Dave who was exceptional at entertaining and informing us about the Pepper Tree Wines.
The grounds are stunning and picturesque, and the staff were very accommodating. The wine was of course exceptional, and we even managed to get a Kath and Kim quote from Dave.

It was a 12/10 experience, and we would highly recommend!

This winery was delightful! The grounds are so beautiful and charming, like something out of a storybook. All the wines we tried were very nice, and our host Rick really looked after us. He added in and swapped out wines based on our individual preferences and was very happy to share his extensive knowledge on the wines and the winemaking process. He was very personable and this level of customer service greatly enhanced our already pleasant visit. Its a bit of a hidden gem but somewhere I will definitely be returning to next time.
