My wife and I have been travelling to the Hunter region for over 15 years. In that time we have watched the standard of the Smelly Cheese Shop slowly but surely deteriorate to the point where we will never go back!!! It's quite obvious the owners are purely interested in profit margins instead of offering an experience. Our latest trip, 3 days ago saw the place full of people (I stopped counting at 40) and there were only 2 people serving at the counter. Both those people were offering cheese tastings which meant the was no one serving. Eventually the staff from the cafe area came out to help but others like myself took our money elsewhere.

We visited this shop as we love gourmet food, shop was cramped, messy and inside table was dirty. It wasn’t busy but we had to wait for ages to be served by an unenthusiastic staff member who’s face would have cracked if she had smiled. Overpriced product and underwhelming experience.

We had the BEST hotdog 🌠we have ever had today. The American Hotdog was the perfect balance of cheese sauce and soft toasted bun! So impressed. The gelato and sorbet was once again amazing and very well priced! Thanks for an a amazing experience.

The last time I went to this shop in Jan I wasn’t inclined to buy any cheese as it had all this plastic over it while displayed..
This time it didn’t have the plastic overlays and has a little fridge you can walk into.. so I bought some..
The 3 stars is just because the store needs a little bit of an update, especially compared to the other shops/ wineries that it shares Roche estate with..
And also the food you can order out back looked a bit random and I didn’t trust how good it would be as it’s a small window at the back of the shop..
The previous time I went here I had a gelato and it was nice.

If you go to the Hunter, it is basically a rite of passage to go to the Smelly cheese shop. It is very overwhelming with choices of cheeses, cold meats, crackers and even some sweets. It's a crazy busy store that is always packed, and I feel like most of the cheeses they sell are now easily accessible in your local supermarket. Its overprices for what you get, but still a good stop for an afternoon cheese board.

My friends and I attended the Red Hot Summer Tour concert at Roche Estate on 15/2. I pre-ordered a hamper from these guys and it was incredible. There was far too much food for the three of us to eat and it was all delicious. I can not recommend this enough!

Coffee ground was terrible. Need to get a new supplier. Cheese was expensive and as extensive as Coles or Woolies. But three times the price. Bacon and cheese roll was delicious. Bit of a tourist trap

Great name. We were hoping that we could do some tastings but that was not the case. It's difficult to select cheeses if you don't have a nibble. Benora has cheese tastings so I don't see why this shop cannot. It's not a COVID thing either as we visited plenty of wineries and there were tastings. The only extra COVID requirement is that we had to sit down and couldn't stand at the counter. There's plenty of variety of cheeses, cold meats, crackers and spreads.
Probably worth a visit but there are now plenty of cheese tasting attractions in the Hunter Valley

Great selection of cheese, cold meats, crackers and spreads. Came here twice on our recent visit and purchased different varieties each time. Really enjoyed the ash bree, labneh (so yum) and spicy salami. The food was delicious and paired well with the local wine.

I was having a great day out in the Hunter valley until We arrived at the Tempus 2 Smelly cheese shop, after being given tiny crumb size samples of hard cheeses we asked for a second try of a Brie which we were about to buy and had some older guy behind the counter belittle us with some snide remark about asking for a second sample, I was quick to remind this rude guy I was the one buying the cheese and didn't appreciate his remarks. We had the young girl apologising for her rude co worker, after that we decided to not buy a thing from Smelly cheese shop and will not recommend this place to anyone that visits the Hunter valley.

Hi KimbaMum,
I have taken my family there several times, my mother just recently, and at the front counter we have tried several cheeses before purchasing. The staff were happy to help and very friendly. Apparently you can just walk in and do tastings at the front counter like we do every time, or if you have a group large or small, you can book them in for a private tasting. Highly recommend this hidden gem.

Hi Jackie,
Wow! Despite my mother and I asking all sorts of questions about the cheeses' taste/qualities, the lady serving us made no suggestion or opening for a taste. Perhaps she was new. Incidentally saw no one else tasting in the shop. Thanks for the tip.
