Newcastle Art Gallery is closed while it undergoes extensive reconstruction. The Art Gallery was designed by local architect Brian Pile. The Art Gallery's geometric form and brutalist aesthetic is under reconstruction while the gallery's expansion is awaited. The expansion project is underway; an additional 1,600 square meters of exhibition space is being added. The Gallery is located in central Newcastle; the Modernist and Contemporary exhibitions are notable. The city of Newcastle awaits a time of new exhibitions.

Introduction was most informative and helpful advice.
Paintings and artworks memorable.
Fabulous Olsen artwork on ceiling above. Marvellous.

Sadly first floor closed - preparing for future exhibition.

Sculptures outside worth looking at: Hinder and Whitely, et al.

Love a visit to this beautiful regional gallery. Enjoyed the Tom Gleghorn exhibition and learning more about this local artist.

And always a highlight to lie back and see the John Olsen on the roof.

A fab gallery with really interesting and changing exhibits. I try and come here each time I visit Newcastle. The gift shop is fantastic. I really enjoyed the small sculpture garden this time I visited - a lovely addition.

A great Gallery and entry is free! They were in the process of changing exhibitions on the ground floor but as we went there to view the John Olsen Exhibition (located on the 1st floor) that didn't worry us. A superb exhibition of Olsen's works and well worth viewing! Free half-hour parking right out front was a welcome bonus! A lovely gallery.

Went to see Mambo exhibition. This was excellent. Had been to gallery before this day and was disappointed in lack of paintings on display. Would only visit if something on in future.

I had a disappointing visit to Newcastle Art Gallery. I found the artworks to be boring. There is a lot of unused apace in the gallery itself. Lots of plain artworks, which do not attract the eye. A lot of them reflect "hardship" - focussing on the difficulties in life. The art gallery is not generally aimed at kids (although they do have a kid's program that you can book children into). It is a shame they chopped the beautiful fig trees down out the front in Laman Street, as they have exposed the ugliest building in Newcastle. On a positive note - it is free to visit.

I just love this gallery - whilst not large at all, it has interesting exhibitions and the staff are super helpful. It's a perfect place to relax for an hour or so.

A fairly good display for the Newcastle area, would have like to see more local upcoming talent on display.

Thanks for your review Darrin, we'd love the chance to display more work in our beautiful space too, particularly local artists. Across the course of any given year, our exhibition program explores a broad spread of artists and ideas, materials, movements etc. Although it is a lucky dip what you get when you come to visit! So we'd love to have you back again sometime!

We attend the Art Gallery each year mainly for a get together with our Financial Planner and his clints, where we have a few drinks and Finger food, but certainly not to be missed is the fine display of artwork exhibited.
