Perhaps the key attraction in Newcastle
Good museums generally have a combination of interesting stories and original artifacts. This brilliant site has both in spades, plus some great views. A fascinating series of rooms tell the tale from the Russia-scares of Victorian times through to comparatively recently. The exhibit on the Japanese submarine attack on the town in WW2 was particularly interesting. There are also some tunnels which require a guided tour. Easy parking on site and an interesting hour or two to be had for history buffs. Highly recommended.

    Interesting and historical Fort
This fort in its present state is relatively new. It also has historical significance for it fired 4 rounds at a Japanese submarine during WW2. The displays are well documented and hold lots of memorable items. Well worth a visit whilst in Newcastle.

    Amazing experience at Fort Scratchly
My family visited Fort Scratchly on January 3rd and did the 2.30pm tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing is wealth of knowledge of the forts history. He was very welcoming and we found the tour extremely interesting. A big thank you to the Fort Scratchly volunteers for all the work you do in maintaining this historical site. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The tunnel tour at Fort Scratchley is a must for gun buffs, military enthusiasts or anyone interested in the history of Newcastle. We had Geoff as our guide who, apart from his encyclopaedic knowledge, had a flair for the dramatic and was able to bring the story of this battlement to life.
The guns were apparently never fired in anger and only served as a deterrent, which is just as well.

The fort is a beautiful piece of history, beautiful views of the surrounding area too. Volunteer guides are also available, although the fort is free, there are tours you can pay for to explore the tunnels underground. Well worth a visit

The fort and the history surrounding and involving the fort which was presented by our tour guide was compelling. The four of us had never visited before and we all were surprised that the foundation of the city was integral to early coal extraction about the site of the fort .
This is a great site to visit, the tour offers more substance to the visit, but even without it the fort is an experience to enjoy.

We had an awesome guide Geoff who explained everything with a few extra bits of trivia. He made the 1hour go really fast and flow easy with a big group. We live in Newcastle and picked up lots of knowledge we never knew.
Tours run regularly and if you had a few extra hours I'd really recommend going :)

Situated high above Nobby’s Beach with great views over Newcastle, this fort is well worth a visit. A tour of the tunnels is highly recommended. Prices for the tour of the tunnels are $13.50 for an adult with concession prices also available. Our guide was Norm and he did an excellent job making the tour informative and entertaining, thanks to his great sense of humour. He is 95 but you wouldn’t guess it as he still has the energy and enthusiasm of someone half his age. At 1pm each day you can watch the cannon be loaded and fired. We spent a good three hours there at least.

Great tour with our guide Ian. He was informative and had many insights into the military and non military Newcastle history as we toured the tunnels in Fort Scratchley. A great way to understand the impact exploration and use of the land had on the local population and the importance of the Fort in the defence of Australia. If you are there at 1pm on the days the time signal cannon is fired it is worth doing the 11.30 tour and hanging about to hear the cannon.

We visited Fort Scratchley on a recent visit to Newcastle. This is very well preserved and presented military heritage site and museum on the coastline near the headland. The views across the headland and coast are spectacular and the various exhibits. There are essentially around four specific museum rooms covering different periods of time from 1882 to WWI, WWII and various gun exmplacements to explore. There is a tour of the underground tunnels for a small fee. The volunteer staff are very enthusiastic and have their own uniforms in the design of Australian Army military dress.

The views are fabulous over newcastle -including Nobby's beach. Newcastle harbour and city beach. The fort's free museum is definitely worth a short visit. However, we did the 11.30am tunnel tour which was mainly aimed for kids, even though we were a group of 20 adults (with only 3 kids) we were taught to count to 6 on our fingers-as one example. The "Tunnel Tour" for $14 per adult- I would not recommend. If you can only do this time, I would ask if you can just look around by yourself.

A tour of the Fort came highly recommended and it didn't disappoint. Our guide Steve was excellent providing interesting information about both the history of Newcastle and of the fort. His passion for the Fort made this an outstanding tour and one that I would highly recommend when visiting Newcastle.

This is a fitting monument to a past which was very different to today.
Unfortunately most of the access is blocked off but you can still get a good idea of how the area was used during the war.
The views over the ocean are spectacular and I would recommend you combine your visit with at least some of the walk from Merewether to Nobby's.
