Highlight of our Westport visit. The Cape Foulwind Seal Colony is a short walk from the visitor carpark. Alternatively, you can park at the Cape Foulwind lighthouse carpark and take the coastal walk to reach the seal colony lookout (about 2km away). The lookout platform...More

Even though it was raining we made the walk to the seal colony viewing point. Really easy walk well kept track and great viewing of the seals (the the pups! So cute!) well away from them so you don't interrupt them in their natural habitat...More

I have never seen so many seals together before! It was cool to look down from the lookout onto them basking on the rocks. A must do if staying in Westport.

As with most paths in NZ, incredibly well maintained and walkable. Even the public restrooms were pretty nice! We had dinner at Bay House which was 15 minutes walk from there, so a great way to start the dinner or end it. Only saw about...More

We were pleasantly surprised when we accidentaly ran into this attraction. After a short walk (10-15mins) on a nice trail/ pavement you get to viewing point where you can see the seal colony really well. There were some babies by the time we were there...More

Park at seal colony rather than lighthouse car park unless you intend to walk between the lighthouse and the colony ( you have to return same way and it's a bit up & down on a very good track)

Very scenic walk to view the seal colony. I found it much better than Kaikoura as you could watch the seals on the rocks and swimming in the waves from the viewing area above the colony. Stunning area on a sunny day and very close...More

You can visit Cape Fowlwind Seal Colony and the lighthouse nearby. You can view the seals through binoculars and then you can take the walkway to the lighthouse. The view seen from this height is breathtaking.

Yes, it smells, but it's worth it! Only a short walk from the car park to views of the seal colony, where you'll always see seals no matter what time of day. They are absolutely gorgeous creatures and so much fun to watch. Bonus: there...More

Sorry for not replying earlier - the seal colony is open 24/7. Indications are that there are resident seals there all year. Enjoy your visit.
