Ringed by the Murchison mountains, the lake provides a beautiful viewing platform and must be refreshing in the summer.

We spent 4 days here in winter and it was very quite which was nice. A great place to access Milford and Doubtful Sounds and a destination worth visiting. Stunning scenery.

Your mind just cant process the vastness of the lake and surrounding mountains. The snow capped peaks were beautiful and on a peaceful morning the sun glowing off the snow was beautiful.

Whether there's fog or sun glistening on the still water of this beautiful lake I can spend hours walking or just watching life transpire. The latest thing you can do is stand up paddling. I just hope they don't allow jet skis.

We have visited Te Anau a few times but not in winter before. Don't expect to fill your days browsing the generally lovely towns and its many little stores & cafes. Walking the street almost 50% of the town is closed for winter with signs saying they are back in September. I know everyone deserves a break, I'm on holidays... More

Ferry tour boat takes you across the lake to a bus which goes through a spectacular pass to the tour boat in Doubtful Sound, passing the surface parts of a deep underground hydro power plant (uses lake water out to the sea). Need a bit of luck/planning to visit without rain. Good accommodations & food in Te Anau including an... More
