We have visited Te Anau a few times but not in winter before. Don't expect to fill your days browsing the generally lovely towns and its many little stores & cafes. Walking the street almost 50% of the town is closed for winter with signs saying they are back in September. I know everyone deserves a break, I'm on holidays... More

Ferry tour boat takes you across the lake to a bus which goes through a spectacular pass to the tour boat in Doubtful Sound, passing the surface parts of a deep underground hydro power plant (uses lake water out to the sea). Need a bit of luck/planning to visit without rain. Good accommodations & food in Te Anau including an... More

A lovely lake to walk alongside, to explore by boat or just to enjoy the different lights during the day and varied weather conditions. You cannot fail to enjoy this town which is well off for shops and eateries.

Amazing.... Beautiful. I was at the lake side in the early morning when it was cold and there was a layer of fog hanging over the lake. There was no one at the lake yet. It was a sight to see. The lake was calm and I felt absolutely at peace and spent some time just admiring the lake. Highly... More

Very nice view at Lake Te Anau. Enjoy taking photo and walking. However, you have to pay 1 NZ$ for toilet there.

From the foreshore, you are only seeing a tiny tiny section of the entire lake, so you really need to take a boat cruise to see more of this gorgeous area. There's also helicopter tours or the awesome float plane. Great place to stay, for connecting you with Milford Sound.
