Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart...

Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart Island and Ulva Island. We are an independent, small local operator specialising in guided walks, overnight treks, bird watching (including pelagic birding) and kiwi spotting tours, boat cruises, sea kayaking and scenic road tours. Our tours are designed to capture the best the island has to offer and carefully matching this to the interests and abilities of the most discerning traveller. Whether you are a gentle explorer or adventurous and active, whether your interests are general or you are an avid birdwatcher, botanist, naturalist or photographer, we certainly have something to offer. Guides bring their in-depth knowledge, a sense of fun with a few local tales, to create a truly memorable experience. We care about the environment and strive to adopt and maintain sustainable practises. Since 2003, we have been donating some of our revenue into our own conservation fund per person per guided tour and water taxi charter. Our tours are all of generous length offering great value. We care about your experience so all our tours are personalised and we can adapt them along the way. Small groups range from 2 to 12 persons. We do cater for private tour groups of more than 12 persons. Customised / private tours are also available. We recommend prior bookings. We operate our own booking office in Stewart Island and we strongly advise that you check directly with us as there are no independent visitors centres in Stewart Island.

We took 3 tours with Furhana, the first being the 1/2 day at Ulva Island, the second being the Paterson Inlet tour and lastly a Kiwi night tour. She also kindly planned my 1/3 Rakiura Track 'preview' walk where we took her boat out to Port William and then tramp back to Oban. First thing you will notice that she... More

We had a most memorable day trip to Ulva Island with Ruggedy Range. The highlight, apart from the kiwis and other amazing bird life was undoubtedly the knowledge and experience of our guide Furhana. Her knowledge of the birds and plants of the area is amazing and she takes great care to ensure that all her clients have the best... More

A trip to see the birds and vegetation on Ulva Island is a unique experience. On my visit to the special ecosystem Ruggedy Range's Firhana shared her considerable knowledge of Ulva Island's wildlife. She geared the tour to the interests of participants and made every effort to help each person see and hear about the birds, flowers, trees and plants... More

Firhana was very knowledgeable and generous with her enthusiasm and care to be sure all participants were able to observe all the birds she found on our walk on Ulva Island. Although highly unlikely, we saw a Kiwi in plain sight about 20 feet from the trail under the forest canopy, looking for seeds, grubs and worms.

Don't be too quick to book your Stewart Island experiences as soon as you land. This little gem is tucked away on Main Road. Staff are great. Shop has good camping equipment, mostly for hire, some to buy. Very professional and client-centred

We booked a half day guided tour with Furhana from Ruggedy Range tours. Ulva island is predator free and thus many endangered birds can safely be released into the forest and allow the numbers to build up. Furhana's knowledge of the flora and fauna and its context in history of this unique island was extensive. She keeps the group side... More

We had the most amazing day with Ruggedy Range! The trip started off well when a Weka greeted us just as we were starting on the tour. Throughout the 4hr tour, we saw so many different types of birds, and even spotted a parakeet feeding its young! We were also educated on the types of plants growing on Ulva Island.... More

I work in the environment industry and carefully read all the tour operator options before going with Furhana at Raggedy Range Tours. Wow what a phantasmorogical experience. Had a Kiwi almost come up to my boot and saw 5 of the endangered birds reintroduced to the island. Furhana is a master at wildlife spotting and only takes small numbers of... More

We booked with Furhana on a number of her tour options. We found her knowledgeable on both plants and animals and even gave us an exclusive tour of the old whaling station which was great. Recommend Ruggedy for your Stewart Island experience.

Four of us joined Furhana on a day trip when we were staying in Stewart Island in March this year. It was a stimulating experience on Ulva Island. Furhana is a true expert in tracing and locating the wonderful bird life. I can safely say if we had not used her we would have seen only a fraction of the... More
