Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart...

Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart Island and Ulva Island. We are an independent, small local operator specialising in guided walks, overnight treks, bird watching (including pelagic birding) and kiwi spotting tours, boat cruises, sea kayaking and scenic road tours. Our tours are designed to capture the best the island has to offer and carefully matching this to the interests and abilities of the most discerning traveller. Whether you are a gentle explorer or adventurous and active, whether your interests are general or you are an avid birdwatcher, botanist, naturalist or photographer, we certainly have something to offer. Guides bring their in-depth knowledge, a sense of fun with a few local tales, to create a truly memorable experience. We care about the environment and strive to adopt and maintain sustainable practises. Since 2003, we have been donating some of our revenue into our own conservation fund per person per guided tour and water taxi charter. Our tours are all of generous length offering great value. We care about your experience so all our tours are personalised and we can adapt them along the way. Small groups range from 2 to 12 persons. We do cater for private tour groups of more than 12 persons. Customised / private tours are also available. We recommend prior bookings. We operate our own booking office in Stewart Island and we strongly advise that you check directly with us as there are no independent visitors centres in Stewart Island.

Excellent tour of Ulva with Furhana - spotted many many birds and she shared much of her knowledge of birds and plants with us. We criss crossed the island, through the temperate rain forest. The highlight was seeing a kiwi which we watched snuffling around for some time - really special. Recommend tours 100%

We had an amazing morning trip to Ulva Island with Furhana as our guide and Kevin as our captain. I have had excellent guides in many places; Furhana topped them all. Not only could she identify and locate all of the birds on the island, she was very knowledgeable about the plants, the ecology of the island and of New... More

We did a half-day hike at Ulva Island led by Furhana, and were thrilled with how great it was! Furhana, owner and guide for Ruggedy Range Wilderness, is focused on the customer experience, ensuring you see as many native birds as possible. She is an extremely knowledgeable guide not only about the birds, but the flora and fauna, natural history... More

I went out on Ruggedy Range's Eco Watch (kiwi spotting) and half day Ulva Island trips and both were absolutely fantastic. The kiwis did keep us searching for a few hours before making an appearance, however our guide knew exactly what to do and where to look to make sure that we saw a kiwi without hassling the birds. There... More

Faranah is a fantastic guide! She is an owner operator and boy it shows. She has incredibly knowledgeable of all aspects of history, fauna and flora in this area. Small groups enable everyone to see and hear all that is around you in Ulva Islands magnificent environment. Faranah has incredible visual and audible awareness and is aware of what is... More

We really enjoyed our 3 day tramp on the Rakiura Great Walk with Fahana, the owner/operator of Ruggedy Range and another couple. If you are looking for a truly unique experience in guided tramping, you can't go wrong. Fahana ensures that everyone is well prepared and knows what they are getting themselves in for. While the prep felt a little... More

We were unlucky with the weather - make sure you have waterproof coats and trousers! However, Furhana put together a well organised itinerary, and the flights and accommodation worked like clockwork. She is a very knowledgeable guide and could spot and point out birds we wouldn't have seen. We had wanted a full day on Ulva Island, but it was... More

Many thanks Bob. The weather has continued to be challenging here as it has elsewhere in New Zealand this season. However, the birds are still about and the plants remain the same. We are lucky we can get back into the dry, but the wildlife has had a demanding few months to contend with during the key part of this... More

Be wary! Hired two pairs of waterproofs and was charged $25 for hire and $ 25 for cleaning. One pair was very worn around crutch and so was not waterproof.Still had to pay cleaning fee. We also found them for sale at the red shed for $ 69.

We offer clients the option to hire quality rain trousers for $25.00 for three days. A reasonable charge for hiring the item, our time in dealing with your request and the overhead of running a shop in the middle of the village. We charge a reasonable rate for cleaning beyond normal general use. You and your wife hired a pair... More

A puffer jacket just won't do if you go when its raining. We went on a half day trip to Ulva Island originally we had planned on a full day trip but there weren't enough bookings for the full day trip - in the end we found the half day was ideal and were pleased that was how it had... More

I am glad we had some spare rain jackets for you as the rain poured on your visit and we all were fairly wet. A good rain jacket is essential anytime of the year, but particularly during this season as our weather has been extremely changeable and wet - more so than any previous summer that I remember. The half... More
