About
Queenstown is the home of New Zealand’s scariest Haunted House! Based in Beach Street, in the CBD, we offer a real, live-action horror experience Challenge yourself and your friends to walk the dark hallways of the old Lockhart Hotel…fun and frights await! Who knows who - or what! - you’ll meet, as you follow the trail of red lights through the old hotel passageways. Fear Factory is best enjoyed with friends, although a few brave souls have ventured in alone and lived to tell the tale! Your deepest fears are brought to life within our haunted corridors - and if you choose to ‘Chicken Out’ you will be added to our growing Chicken List of 30,000 souls in the last 10 years! Our experience is aimed at adults, but older children are welcome accompanied by a parent or guardian. The tour takes approximately 20 minutes. Are you brave enough? If you make it out alive, you’ll have the time of your life!

We did this on Friday 13th of March 2020 and I would recommend it. We were talking about it for days afterwards. The experience is full on and I wouldn’t recommend for kids under 13 as it is pitch black and scary. Must do if In Queenstown

Well that was definitely better than I was expecting as it definitely made me scream, jump and laugh. The pure darkness really made it authentically put you on the edge. Highly recommend to try at least once. Staff were lovely too.

We were clinging to each other the whole time, scared to turn corners and just generally shaking and muttering prayers under our breath. The whole experience (all in almost pitch black darkness) lasted about 20 minutes. Took about the same time for my pulse to return to normal. Great scares but still felt respectful and safe.

We had an amazing time at Fear Factory. You spend most of the time in the dark, so there are plenty of scares. My GF had no voice by the time we left from screaming and laughing so much. It only takes 20 minutes too, so it’s easy to fit in at the end of the day

Dark, sensory deprived, tense, scary FUN. Easy to book, easy to find in town. Awesome fit out. Staff are super friendly. It’s a well oiled machine. It’s worth the money. Keep an eye out for the $5 off vouchers in town. I was scared, cringed a lot and I loved it.

We did this after a lot of hesitation as had never been to any haunted house before. So glad we did, we were terrified, screaming and laughing with fear the entire time. So much fun and pretty proud we didn't end up on the chicken list!!! All the staff are fantastic! Would definitely recommend!!!

There were two of us, we got separated when we went down the dead end, after I got an electric shock and turned around to go the other way, was when we separated, we were apart for about 10-15 seconds, in talking contact until we got together again, someone with an attitude then came in and said we had to leave because we got separated and were a danger to ourselves and others, it was the only time we were not in physical contact and the staff member lied about us being apart for longer and on other occasions.
The experience apart from this was not worth the money anyway, it was not scary, I would not recommend this to anyone who wants to have some fun and that they are not in the business of allowing people to have fun.
I must state we did not break anything, damage anything or anyone. They will say they are great, but they are not.

ColinChristchurch we are surprised you have so misrepresented what actually happened during your visit. Perhaps you are unaware we have security footage which clearly shows the truth - film of you and your friend throwing punches at our staff, hitting out and using bad language. You were unhappy when you were repeatedly warned to stop this behaviour - and it was clear to us when you were asked to leave and then bought out to Reception that you had both been drinking. We pride ourselves on great customer service and providing a fun time for our guests - as reflected by the large number of positive reviews that truthfully reflect our visitors experience at Fear Factory Queenstown

we went on a whim off the street. A family 2 adults ,15 year ,12 year old and a 9 year old. We were never told that it wasn't suitable for children. we were told to go in line from shortest to tallest .Bad idea! adult at front and back should have been the recommendation..9 year old was out with 1 adult very quickly. The remaining 3 lasted a little longer. Be warned the actors touch you.Our children hated this and repeatedly asked not to be touched. We found the red lights few and far between and had to guide ourselves by touch. Kids found it creepy apposed to scary.

Hello Danehal, We read your review and have checked our security footage which shows the way your group behaved during your visit. Our response is as follows: Before you entered our attraction you were told that 2 of your children were below our recommended minimum age of 15 and i may not be suitable, but you insisted they go through with you. This was totally against our Manager's advice. Further, you were told during your briefing that Fear Factory is live and interactive and that our actors would touch your group. You verbally agreed this was fine, and then also signed our Terms and Conditions to this effect. You were told if the experience became too intense you could use our safety words 'I Chicken Out' and that you would immediately be bought out of the attraction. And finally, our security footage shows you being both verbally and physically abusive towards our staff. Your review clearly does not reflect what actually happened during your visit. We pride ourselves on great customer service and providing a wonderful time for our guests - as reflected by the large number of positive reviews that accurately reflect our visitors experience with us

Staff were rude, the "ghosts and monster" actors in the house went out of character multiple times, telling us to "hurry up and get on with it." This ruined the experience and made us feel unwelcome and not scared. Very disappointing, wouldn't recommend

466evie, I have watched our video security footage which recorded you and your friend's entire trip through Fear Factory. I have also spoken to our actors who were on duty during your visit and who have first hand knowledge of the way you both behaved. Both sources verify you were verbally abusing our actors and also breaking most of our rules and guidelines - the very same ones you had agreed to adhere to before entering our attraction. In addition, I could see that you kicked out at our equipment during the first few minutes of your visit, and you caused some damage to it as a result. It is interesting to note that you both felt good enough about your experience afterwards to then purchase your photograph pack! The photos show you both clearly having a great time, strongly suggesting the opposite to your review. We are therefore very surprised at the tone you have taken - it clearly does not reflect what really happened during your visit, and paints a very different picture to what actually took place. We pride ourselves on great customer service and providing a wonderful time for our guests - as reflected by the large number of positive reviews that accurately reflect our visitors experience with us

My 11 year old was keen as mustard to do this because older kids told her it was the best thing they did in Queenstown. Against my better judgment I agreed in a weak moment. She lasted less than 30 secs. She was absolutely terrified. Flatly refused to continue so no refund. They did offer we could come back within two hours but there was no way she would have.
Certainly wasn't the attraction's fault but very disappointing given the extremely short period of time we were there that there wasn't something refunded - the most expensive 30 secs of our trip!
Don't let your kids persuade you into it!

Hi Cathy255118, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review here on Trip Advisor
We were very sorry to hear that your experience wasn't up to your expectations, especially as your daughter was so keen to visit us.
As our staff would have mentioned to you, we have a recommended age of 15 years and over as we do advertise our attraction as being 'New Zealand's Scariest Haunted House'.'
However we always leave it to parents to make the final decision if they would like their children to enter, as they would obviously know their child much better than us.
During the briefing that we give every visitor, we make it clear that once guests go through the Red Door, we are afraid we can't offer a refund - however if people do 'Chicken Out' they are given the opportunity (and encouraged!), to try again. Every visitor is different, and children (and also adults!), vary a lot in their ability to handle being scared.
We appreciate your feedback. We are continuing to emphasise to parents that Fear Factory Queenstown is aimed at adults, and that younger children only enter at their parent's discretion. With best wishes from the Fear Factory Team

What's the scary stuff inside? Can you see the actors or do they scare you by touching and grabbing. A bit concerned if it's the latter. Thanks
Written December 13, 2017
No you can't see the actors but yes you can feel and sense them they are closer to you than you think. the don't grab you but sometime they touch your leg or shoulder. Sometime they ran beside you sometime suddenly appear toward you or breath loudly close to your ear. just make sure you don't piss yourself
