Very natural countryside with sheep grazing beside the road. However upon reaching the lake the sand flies and mozzies were out in full force. So don’t visit unless you have insect repellent as I had to sit in the car in the end. Besides the...More

This walk was recommended by the Dept. of Conservation tourist centre but, like so may others, it is somewhat weather dependent. I found the drive up to be scenic and stopped more than once to take some shots. As indicated in other reviews, the last...More

Besides the sandflies, this is one quiet and peaceful lake to watch the day go by. People come here for a picnic, to read a book, and it is also a campervan site. The drive-in can be a bit tough on your car if it's...More

Took the time to drive out to Moke Lake in October and found it to be really quite pretty. My suggestion would be to make sure you have a 4WD, but I guess you could do it with a 2WD (just not as comfortable).

Great spot to visit for the day or to camp. The loop track around the lake is a lovely walk and worth doing.

Decided to make the journey into Moke Lake. It is a bit of a drive over narrow dirt roads which ends at a camping area at the lakes edge plus a horse treking business. I enjoyed the trip but unless you want to go horse...More

In New Zealand when we travel on a gravel road it is usually many km's. This one was not that far. You are greeted by a beautiful lake. There is parking at the star, but it is best to drive on to the toilet area....More

Amazing walk around Moke Lake just a short 15 minute drive from Queenstown. This is a must do walk, taking around 1 - 2 hours depending on how fast you walk and how many times you stop. Easy walk which does include a couple of...More

Depends on the weather. Last night we had heavy rain so probably not because road will be muddy. And in winter road has ice. But in the middle of dry weather you will probably be able to get through. Note road is very... More

DOC campsite pass questions (4 Replies)
We have rented a self-contained campervan and are planning to get the DOC campsite pass. I have a few question I hope we could get help with: 1. For those campsites included in the conservation campsite pass, I presume it's a first come fist serve basis. Say we are parked at Moke Lake campground, and wanted to do a few days worth of activities in Queenstown, does it mean each time we head out for the day, and return to Moke Lake we'd have to find another spot once we drive back late...More

< Is there any other way around accessing hot showers without paying ...> So you have paid thousands for airfares & thousands more for a camper van and you want to deprive a small business owner of revenue by sneaking in to a camp ground for free showers?

Nature/Greenery Places must visit and most beautiful (7 Replies)
Hi, We will be visiting NZ in mid October for 11 days. We would like to cover main nature attractions. Our interests are in nature (green), scenic places and some less challenging activities like jet boating etc. We will be renting a car and will be travelling from Auckland to Queenstown. Our planned itinerary is as follow. Please suggest what can be added or changed in the same. Day 1 Landing in Auckland by 5 p.m. will be covering Sky tower, Michael joseph memorial park or one...More

Are you bringing a Tardis? I know that a "wish list" is just that, but you need to be a lot more realistic. Lets look at days 6 & 7: Assuming you are spending N5 in Taupo: D6. Drive Taupo to Wellington (5 hr just driving so lets call it 6 hr with stops - 9 am - 3 pm); PM cable car, Te Papa; D7. Early AM ferry; arrive Picton around noon; drive to Kaikoura (2:30hr) Too late for a whale watch tour; no time to go to ATNP; maybe spend an hour in Blenheim if you want to taste wine. D 8....More

2 days in Queenstown (2 Replies)
Hi there, We will be staying at Queenstown for 2 nights before going to Te Ananu. Will be reaching Queenstown on 28 Oct, in the afternoon. Depending on the weather, may be going skydive in the afternoon. otherwise, will be the second day. If all is good on first day, what stuffs can we do at night? Places that i have researched are Moke Lake - Lake Wakatipu - Glenorchy - Paradise. Will be going to these places on 2nd day. Thank you.
