    Best Winery near Queenstown
We absolutely loved our visit to Wet Jacket, so much that we came back before leaving Queenstown to restock on some of the wines! The woolshed is such an intimate spot for the wine tasting and the man serving us was super knowledgeable and helpful. We could have stayed for ages chatting and learning about the wines. The wines were all fantastic, our favorite that we tried from quite a few winery visits and definitely the best value around. I would love to come back in summer when they open up the outside area. We really loved this experience and can recommend it to anyone looking to visit wineries in Queenstown area.

    Hidden in plain sight
This winery is in the main road fromQueenstown to Cromwell so in plain sight. But certainly not as well known as some of the others around. We only ended up going in here because the wineries in the Gibbston Valley all were closed at 5pm when we drove through and this was open till 6. So glad we found it. Yes great setting - wine tasting is in original Croft fro. Scottish farming family (160 years old is old for a NZ building). 80% of sales are from cellar door so you aren’t going to find this in your local restaurant or wine shop. All agreed Pinot Gris was wonderful, but a different Gerwurtztraminer and a Pinot Noir that had a bit more depth than some of the others. Think we will be online purchasers in future!

History on the outside, Luxury on the inside
Wet Jacket winery caught us by surprise. One of our party had missed out on his last trip, so we decided we may as well give it a go. From the outside, this old sheep shed looks quaint and well kept. As soon as you enter the building though, you feel the sense of class and a dash of luxury that has been infused into this place. We tried a bit of cheese on the way through, and couldn't help ourselves from buying a block. We were well looked after for our wine tasting, and of course bought a couple of bottles their bright tasting sauvignon blanc for the summer ahead.

Where not to go when visiting a winery
We were a group of 14 with an 18th month old toddler visiting Arrowtown for a family wedding. One of the our party had called ahead to ensure the winery could accommodate us. We did not book a tasting, we wanted to have a drink and eat from the food truck that was present. On arrival, we received a very lukewarm reception and things went downhill from there. We were the only people on the property for the duration of our visit (about an hour) and it was a very cold day. We were informed that we were unable to sit inside in the comfortable room available because of restrictions on their license which seemed implausible. However, we ordered a drink each and some of us enjoyed tasty tacos from the food truck. My little grandson was enjoying a run around in the lovely grounds - my daughter who was playing with him was told very brusquely to put her mask on even though she was outdoors and a long way from us who were sitting unmasked. We finished our drinks and determined not to spend another cent in the place, decamped to another winery who were warm, welcoming and deserving of our custom.
Dear Kerry B To start with, and I am just guessing here (I could be wrong), you are not involved in the hospitality industry? When your group made your reservation our General Manger spoke with the organiser of your party as we had just moved to the Red Light setting. She was very clear about the rules and restrictions that were in place for hospitality businesses, and it seemed at the time your group understood this. From the moment your group arrived you refused to follow the current covid rules and not only ignored the polite request of the staff, they were utterly rude when engaged with. You had not hired the venue for your private party, so regardless of being the only ones onsite you are still obliged to follow the rules. Anyone working in the hospitality industry over these trying times, who are just doing their jobs to make it safe for all, should not be subjected to the rudeness or self-entitlement of any customer. Not only were the staff told to “grow up” when requesting the use of masks, they were eye rolled at and then completely ignored. It should be mentioned we are instructed to implement these rules, at great expense to the operation, and should not be subjected to the rudeness and arrogance of any customer who does not want to follow them – we do not make these rules. I am sure you are as aware as us of the businesses that were fined ($20,000) over this period for not implementing the rules correctly? On top of this, if you would like to question our licensed areas and what is considered the on-licence and off-licensed part the venue, please contact the QLDC as I don’t have the time to do so here. Our only regret is that we didn’t reach out to other hospitality business in the area so they could refuse entry to a group with such utter disrespect for people who are simply trying to do their jobs and follow the rules. These have been trying times for everyone - I would not think simple kindness should be so hard.

Put it in the GPS and you are there. Easy drive from Q'town
The name alone has to arouse your curiosity. Visit and you won't be disappointed. In some ways if your time is limited visit these smaller wineries in the region for they have a load of character and are very friendly. Often you can get the wines from the bigger ones back home if you are an NZer. Relaxed friendly reception which made the tasting all the more interesting. Cam away with a bottle or two.

    Superb wines
You can’t go to Queenstown and not visit Wet Jacket’s cellar door. Their selection of wines from Central Otago are superb! The ambiance of the Woolshed is authentic, relaxed and friendly, and their expertise and knowledge of wines is first class. I was particularly drawn in by the Wet Jacket story and it’s connection to New Zealand’s history.... don’t forget to ask! If you have to choose between a few cellar doors.... make sure Wet Jacket is on your list!

    What a rare gem!
I go to Queenstown a fair amount for business and leisure. Once I had discovered Wet Jacket I keep bringing people here to experience it! Fantastic wine and venue. I especially love going in summer for the “summer sessions” to sit on a bean bag and have a glass of wine or two with yummy food from the food truck. The staff have all been amazing and so passionate. I feel like I’m coming back to visit friends. Last time I was here they opened a new deli with delicious treats. Well worth a visit.

    Great atmosphere for a tasting
We popped in for a tasting late in the morning and there was only one other couple there so we got a very personal experience. The buildings have been well done, converted from old shearing sheds. We also tasted some cheeses and they sealed some cheese that we bought so we could take it back to Australia that day.

    An incredible experience
I’ve visited Queenstown many times and done many of the winery/vineyard tours in the area. Wet Jacket is hands-down the best experience I have had in the region. Our host (Jaime) was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and professional, and the venue itself was breathtakingly beautiful. Wet Jacket has such a rich history and it is incredibly well integrated into the experience. The wine itself delicious and I cannot wait to open the bottles we took home. My partner and I will be returning to Wet Jacket for sure.

A venue that ticks all the boxes
The most amazing place to drink, eat, relax and just kick back! So unpretentious yet top quality food from Jo's food truck and the wine, beer and service is top notch. Check out social media for the live music acts that pop up. Great venue for families too, they even have outdoor games to play with if you're so inclined!

So happy that we decided to go to this winery for a tasting, the staff were absolutely fabulous. We were given a lot of information about the wines we were sampling and had the ability to ask questions. It felt a lot more intimate than other wineries which was lovely. The Pinot Gris was delightful. The shed is stunning. Would definitely recommend it to friends.

The cheapest wine tasting around! In an excellent setting- with the woolshed, building and warm setting. I'm not usually a fan of white wines but their selection had some of the nicest I've ever tasted. We visited as part of a tour and managed to fit in two tastings in the slot! Delicious!!!

We stopped in here as we spotted this vineyard when driving from Gibbston Valley. We were so impressed with the warm welcome and great customer service. I enjoyed the wine tasting with the very knowledgeable staff member. The setting is lovely if you just want to sit back with a wine. Really pretty spot with great wines and friendly service.
