About The Seasider
The Seasider is a fantastic additional trip to the Taieri Gorge Railway tour experience. Running in summer, this trip has an option of either a 2-hour return trip to Waitati or a four hour trip to the busy highway town of Palmerston. Both choices offer fantastic views over Otago Harbour and the wild coastline. The Seasider is considered a "must-do" railway trip in New Zealand, not just for train enthusiasts, and is a brilliant, qualmark endorsed all weather entertainment option. Enjoyable fun for the whole family. Check out our other awesome train journey - Taieri Gorge Railway.

Anyone deciding to take the seasider should not waste their time or money. We were told by the ticket seller that the train goes to Palmerston. It stopped on dead stretch of track. The commentary while light hearted was full of misleading information. We were totally disappointed and find it hard to believe any positive review this scam gets.

We read some reviews about the 70$ being a waste of money, but decided to do it anyway after reading quite a few positive reviews as well. We should've listened to the negative reviews, because it was highly disappointing for the amount of money we spent. I think we got like 5 good views of the ocean that passed in a few seconds or a minute when lucky. In between those moments we'd either be looking at the inside of a dark tunnel or a lot of trees and bushes. We kept hoping it'd get better, but when it was announced that we had reached the end and we were about to head back to Dunedin, we realised what a bad idea it was to buy these tickets. The commentator did his best to make something of it and we picked up some nice pieces of information, but that's about it. All in all, definitely not recommended to spend your money on this. Especially if you're roadtripping like we were, because you'll see a lot more just driving on the road.

If you want to waste $70 take this train trip.this is the worst #$70 spent. There are only few spots where you can catch some scenic views from the carriage window and if you blink you will miss it. What you will see is trees and rockbanks .the train stops for 20 mnts in a paddock where there is nothing to see and returns same way. If you are lucky you can swap your seats with fellow passengers otherwise you will see pretty much nothing. Extremly dissapointed You are much better taking a tour on the Harley bike and it's same price.

Very pleasant journey on the Taieri Gorge railway past stunning scenery along, over and through some engineering marvels. Very informative commentary by Dave and friendly staff in the dining car.

Hi there daveandvic, Thank you for leaving a review :). It's great that you enjoyed the Taieri Gorge Railway, it does travel through some beautiful scenery and there are some impressive pieces of engineering along the line. Our staff do a great job onboard at the cafe and with the live commentary. This Tripadvisor page is for our Seasider journey, which is different from the Taieri Gorge Railway as it is a shorter (2-2.5 hour) journey that follows the beautiful Otago Coastline. Hopefully when you are next in town we might see you onboard. Thanks and regards, Natasha - Dunedin Railways

Stunning views, and comfortable train. We were cruising with Royal Caribbean, and bought this excursion by our owns. The big problem that it has, is the time management. We started late, very late, and in less than 15 minutes the train stopped, waiting for a freight train that has preference. They knew that it could happen, but they don’t tell you when you buy the ticket. At the end, we couldn’t finish the excursion, and had to hop off one previous station so we could reach on time the cruise. So we feel we’ve been lied. It was said in advance that we had to be in the ship, and still we were told we could be on time with a big margin.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad to hear you found the views stunning and were comfortable onboard. However we are very sorry that your journey was delayed. It is important for us to get you back to the ship ontime which is why there is an option for people to get dropped of back at Port Chalmers. But we absolutely understand your frustration for not being able to complete the return journey. It is important to us that we are honest with our passengers and we are sorry you were not informed of the delay, this shouldn't have happened. We will work hard to make sure this does not happen again. Cheers, Natasha Cameron Dunedin Railways
