We boarded the Taieri Gorge Railway train in downtown Dunedin in the architecturally beautiful terminal building and settled into our passenger car that dated back to about 1906. Somehow, I do believe that these cars have been restored and upgraded over the years to bring them up to today's standards. The interiors were very rich with stained and varnished real... More

A wonderful experience helped by the first sunny day for a while. Excellent views from the carriage and viewing deck. Reasonably priced snacks and drinks and pleasant staff. Good commentary.

We did this train ride while our ship was in port and loved every minute of it . The train itself with it's old well maintained carriages was very comfortable and their is a dining car for those that get a bit peckish or fancy a drink. A long train that was full of passengers and a great gentleman conductor... More

The train does two runs per day. One at 0930 and the other 1430. The engines are fairly modern but the carriages are old fashion and nystalgic. The day was very wet and windy but the scenery was spectacular. The deep gorge and fast flowing river was a great photographic opportunity. The train has a buffet car for snacks and... More

We are a bit spoiled for having been on many terrific railway journeys so may be biased. This was a nice trip though, some beautiful scenery, interesting train with comfortable seats. While taking a few hours the trip did not drag. I wouldn't recommend ordering the packed lunch though as you are better off choosing from the choices in the... More

This was a beautiful ride in a comfortable train. They plied us with snacks and lunch (we had the deluxe tour). It was a little difficult for me to get on and off the train (I have trouble with steps), but the train man helped, as did my husband. I opted to stay on the train when it stopped for... More

We did our journey on the railway as a shore excursion from the Carnival Legend on a cruise to New Zealand. Now, I will let you know up front that both of us love trains and, in particular, different and unique journeys so this one was a "no-brainer" for us. As a cruise passenger we paid, what some considered, a... More

Well organised ticket office, had our tickets ready with reserved seats. Beautiful enjoyable train trip with informative commentary. Local people and kids waved the passing train - very nice. Amazing experience - a must do. Some of the world's longest wrought iron bridges also, with great photo ops.
