A definite must see! This was our second visit, incredibly interesting. The 3D session of Aliens was informative and a bit mind blowing (in a good way!).

Animal Attic. Moa Skeletons. The natural history collection is pretty good. Don't miss the wildlife photography competition display if it's open. I could take or leave the planetarium.

My family with young children aged 6 and 10 were fully entertained at the museum for a few hours. The science centre and the butterfly display were a really big hit. I’d plan on three hours to really be able to see everything. Parking is...More

We went for the Butterfly live experience but got captivated by the science interactive experiences! Not only the girls! My husband and me we got totally involved! Whether it is building an earthquake building and testing it or viewing our skeleton on a bike, pure...More

7th visit to Dunedin, 1st visit to Otago Museum - loved it. The show in the planetarium on the history of flight was just amazing. The talk on the night sky was also really interesting, more so for me than younger kids. The female presenter...More

This was my second visit to the Butterfly House and I was not disappointed, if anything they had even more butterflies than last time. A staff member gave a talk and then they turned on the tropical rain for a while. Absolutely amazing place for...More

Looking to fill in the afternoon with my 7yr old so visited the museum. She absolutely loved playing with the butterflies and spent a good couple of hours immersed in the Tahura activity centre. Quite educational too.

We arrived in Dunedin unsure what would suite everyone’s needs given that the kids are ages 18-22. But the museum matched all the expectations and more. It’s interactive, has lots of local information and extra movies about space for a cost of $10pp.

South Island Itinerary (4 Replies)
Hello everyone! We are a family of 3(including a 4 year old) and will be making a trip to South Island from 15 Oct to 31 Oct. We have booked the accommodation for the Christchurch to Mount Cook leg already, then I realised that we may be moving in an unusual or wrong direction. Please help. Will below itinerary work? We love farms, are there any along the way that you would recommend as farm stay or a visit? Is Oct the season for any fruits? Thanks! 15 Oct One night at Christchurch ...More

Welcome to TA. This looks like a well planned itinerary although the purists will say that you are travelling in the less scenic direction! It is especially beautiful heading west towards the Southern Alps from the very flat Canterbury Plains. In addition you have an awful lot of one night stays, but this is your choice to travel slightly shorter distances each day (eg stopping at Lake Tekapo instead of driving straight to MT Cook and stopping in Arthurs Pass instead of driving Punakaiki to...More

Trip Report - Where there's a "WOW" around every corner! (6 Replies)
March/April 2012. This was our first trip to NZ and we are wondering why it’s taken us so long to get there when it’s so close. The review is pretty long, so apologies if it bores you. Sometimes I just can’t help myself. We had originally intended to cover the whole of the South Island but found we liked some places so much that we stayed extra nights, so we didn’t get right to the north or the south. Luckily we are not too far away and will be able to get back to see some more. I...More

Many thanks for your wonderful trip report, Goannas. You've managed to Wow me and I'm merely reading about it. But drinking it all in for my next South Island visit. Hopefully you and Mr G are planning a return visit?. The trout fishing around the central North Island is claimed to be pretty good also! Cheers and enjoy your day.

A more realistic (28) day March itinerary (3 Replies)
I've been avidly reading the forums here (thanks to everyone who contributes - it's most helpful) to improve on my initial tentative 21 day itinerary. I've decided that in order to travel at a more leisurely pace, I'll increase my visit to 28 days, saving the North Island for another time. So here's my new and improved itinerary. (I've included activities that interest me at each place for the benefit of others who are planning similar trips, knowing that many are expensive and/or...More

Hi Suzanne You've crafted a really excellent trip and it's nicely balanced with plenty of non-driving days to properly explore. Have a wonderful trip and please return afterwards and let us know how it all goes :)
