Taieri Gorge Railway and the Otago Peninsula Day Trip from Dunedin

58 reviews
Ride the Taieri Gorge Railway on a round-trip route from Dunedin to Pukerangi, and take a guided tour of the Otago Peninsula by minivan in the afternoon. The train steams through vivid South Island landscapes including the Taieri Plains and Taieri Gorge, stopping en route for photo ops plus a leg stretch in Pukerangi. Then dig your toes in the sand at Otago’s gorgeous beaches and keep a lookout for oceanic wildlife. Upgrade to include a gourmet boxed lunch.

This was my second time in Dunedin this year and I stayed here a bit longer this time by myself. I was told by a few of my friends/ work colleagues who are originally from Dunedin that I definitely should do this tour so I made a booking online a day before and went there. Parking can be surprisingly horrible in Dunedin because my guess is there are many uni students driving to the city area to go to school but you can find a parking spot quite easily around the Olveston house. As soon as I walked through the gate, I saw this beautiful Edwardian house standing tall, walked around the garden before I checked in, it was absolutely beautiful. When I walked into the main building, everyone greeted me so warmly and friendly. I had 4 other people in my tour and they were all locals, I enjoyed talking to them as well. Our tour guide (Krysten? Kirsten? I am so sorry! my bad memories...) was amazing and she was so friendly and professional. We asked her so many questions and she was just full of knowledge of this place, she explained every question with so much details you can just tell everyone working her has so much passion and love for this place. When she told us about the Theomin family, it honestly almost felt like as if I knew them personally. This was their home and a very personal space. I personally love history, different cultures and arts. There are so many things to see in here, David Theomin's personal collection turned this place into a museum so you don't just get to experience this beautiful house but also some genuine art pieces from all around the world. I felt so warm after I left the place. you can definitely feel the family who used to live there and the people looking after the place now have so much love and care for the house.

Not a cheap tour but very interesting. The house is in great condition and packed with history. The person who guided us (fortunately we were the only people on the tour) was very informative and opened up after a bit of work.

What a treat to look participate in a two hour extended house tour, our guide Kevin was very knowledgeable and present all the information in an easily understood manner. The bonus was a visit well below stairs, into the basement for a visit to the boiler rooms. The collection is simply incredible and up to the standard of the stately homes of Europe

Thank you for your lovely review. Kevin and the team love showing off this gem that belongs to the people of Dunedin. It is nice to hear the stand is up there with the homes of Europe.
