- kelly11584Auckland Central, New Zealand173 contributionsExcellent placeI went with my brother, sister in law and nephew as it was my first time in Dunedin. It was a great day walking and I got to see the beach. It was very noise as the waves hit the rocks. Brother meet someone he work with and they chatted as I go to look around. I will come again and go to the other beach my brother told me about as we need to get my nephew back home.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 10, 2024
- claricuchiBuenos Aires, Argentina1,131 contributionsnice beach and nice neighborhoodWe didn't go to the beach but we walked along the coast. very nice place in dunedin. It was one of the cities that we liked the most on the South Island after Christchurch. The neighborhood in general is very nice with a relaxed and typical beach atmosphere.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 14, 2024

- Dave MDunblane, United Kingdom170 contributionsWell worth a visitWell worth a visit if you’re in Dunedin. Lovely part of town. Stroll along the prom and then down onto the beach, or watch the surfers, for a bite to eat I’d recommend Titi a really good restaurant or The Esplanade for Italian.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 17, 2024

This is a lovely beach especially on a sunny day. We parked at St Kilda and walked over the sandhills onto the beach and along to St Clair and then right up to the rocks. It is a great place to take a stroll and just amazing to be part of a city. Well worth a visit. The statue of "Mum's the entrance to the beach is a fitting tribute to the first sea lion to breed on the mainland.

Beautiful walk along the water front with stairwell access points down to the watwrs edge when the tide is right.
Views are amazing and they go on for miles.
Plenty of cafes, restaurants, coffee stops along the way.
There is a really cool rock pool at the top end (small charge to enter I think)
Great strolling spot to unwind at the end of the day or meet up with famiky and friends for lunch.

Loved this beach not only because of its natural beauty but also because of the feeling of an integral part of the community and the city. Great to see people come to enjoy the beach in different ways. Spotted sea lions and various types of birds.

We stayed at Dunedin for several days to visit some of the more popular sights.
St Clairs Beach came up as one of the best beaches in the area.
The postives are that the residents of Dunedin are lucky to have a beach so close to town. It probaly only took 15 minutes drive from the centre of the city.
As far as beaches go I would rank it slightly above average. There a lot of large boulders around and when we visited in the afternoon there wasnt much beach left due to higher tide.
The area was very quiet when we visited with only about three restaurants. Being just after Christmas only one was open.
I guess I am spoilt as Australia has so many nice beaches to visit.

Just 15 mins from the city centre is a nice strip of beach with many cafes and surfers. I guess due to the number of people, there was no seals in sight. Lots of parking and easy to get to if you drive. Lots of seating along the esplanade as well.

We were there yesterday (12th Dec), and the waves were just wonderful, some coming over the banks. I, in a wheelchair, found it quite exhilarating, especially when one of the waves wet me! There seemed to be a surf competition on, but people accommodated me and my husband, moving barriers to let us through. I really enjoyed it.

Visited on a windy cold but sunny day, it was visually stunning. I love the rugged beauty of the Coast. There is plenty to do at the beach, wander around, go for a surf, enjoy one of the cafes. Loved it nice little seaside community with huge views.

St Clair beach was a huge surprise for us. It is absolutely stunning and if we were there during the day I am sure we would have seen a lot of surfers as the waves look good for that. We are gutted we did not have more time to spend walking the esplanade as it really was worth spending time at.

Want to strut along a picturesque esplanade, then this is the place for you. Lovely little seaside town of St Clair will easily start your love affair with Dunedin. It’s such a gorgeous place with sweeping panoramic, great coffee shops and the salt baths at the end.

Gorgeous beach. Rough at right end but better to the left. Windy and lots of big waves. A few people in the water briefly near the shore.
Good for a walk.
Lots of cute restaurants on the right end.

Hi we will be calling in on Boxing Day this year with about 2000 passengers on Sea Princess.
We would like to visit St Clair Beach. Is there public transport or many taxis on Boxing day? We are some of us unable to walk long distances. I also read about Tunnel Beach but the info suggests there is much walking involved to access that location.
Appreciate any assistance.
