You can easily spend a few hours hiking, strolling with the fam and enjoying the views at the Victoria Park. For those looking for a top-notch sunset and night views, this is the place to go in Chch. You can hike and bike here also or participate in one of the many family events held here.

This lookout is very near to Victoria Park, off Takahe Drive. It offers scenic view of Cashmere Hill and City view.

I always organise a walk at Victoria Park whenever I visit NZ. This time I did part of the Tawhairaunui Trail starting near the visitor centre. There are public toliets and a water drinking fountain nearby, plus a fabulous children's palyground. I chose a short 15 mintue walk that ends near the picturesque dog exercise park with bay views. There is a lovely tree top resting point with glimpses of Christchurch. I also recommend a drive up to Kiwi Point which has spectacular views.

This park is amazing. Tonnes of walkways of all sorts, dog park, tracks(some pram friendly, some not!). Then there's that amazing long slide! One of a kind in chch that's for sure. The views make you feel on top of the world!

BY bus no 12 from Designer Cottage B&B (Recommended by the host). Walk from the Sign of Takehe to Victoria Park. The view was just stunning. Best time is morning or sunset.

Googled nice walks in Chch and this came up. Drove there just as the sun was setting and had the whole thing pretty much to myself. Great spot for a quiet moment of reflection and to watch the world go by. Head up to the top of the children's slide for the best view!

Although I have spent lots of time exploring the Port Hills - pre quake, this was my first visit to Victoria Park and was suggested to us by a local. The park offers great views of the city and lots of walking tracks as well as a memorial to the 19th Infantry Battalion . There's a nice picnic table near the memorial a good place to reflect on the sanctity of life. Beautiful flowers & shrubs. Walks of varying lengths, plenty of parking areas.

Victoria Park is a must visit destination for visitors to Christchurch. Perched high on Cashmere Hill there are amazing views across the city, over the Canterbury Plains towards the Southern Alps, south as far as Timaru and north towards Kaikoura and Pegasus Bay. It was opened in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria and contains areas of native bush, exotic plantings, and tussock grasslands with rocky bluffs.
The park has numerous walking tracks, both along the ridges and tussock areas and through native bush, as well as a number of well marked mountain bike tracks which are very popular. Many tracks link up with a network of both cycling and walking options around the Port Hills and Crater Rim. Although some tracks and most of the Summit Road remain closed after the 2011 earthquakes, all those in the Victoria Park area are open and well patronised.
The top of the park is bordered by the Summit Road, near the Sugar Loaf landmark, with views from there into Lyttleton Harbour and beyond. Two historic roadhouses, Sign of the Takahe and Sign of the Kiwi (operating as cafes/restaurants) are at each end of the park, however both are currently still closed due to earthquake damage.
There is also a children's playground, picnic areas, good car parking and dog exercise parks. A war memorial to the 19th Battalion is sited within the park, providing a focal point for annual ANZAC day commemorations. Plantings of trees from each area where the Battalion fought during WW2 (Greece, Crete, North Africa and Italy) border the site.
A small visitors centre has displays of the local geology, flora and fauna. Native Bellbirds can often be seen and heard throughout the park.
Situated between 200-300 m above the city it occasionally snows in winter so at those times it is a very popular place for local children to toboggan and play in the snow. Although at times it can be quite windy due to the elevation, it is usually possible to find sheltered areas and tracks in the lee of the hill to enjoy.
Living close to the park, I am very fortunate to be able to visit most days and highly recommend it to anyone coming to Christchurch.

Hi, is Victoria park at a higher point or sign of Kiwi. Thank you
Written September 16, 2023
any way to drive up to the peak? I have family with mobility issues and that's a problem if it's only accessible by walking.
Written June 13, 2016
Yes, you can drive right into the Park, and there are mobility parks there for you. Some of the tracks are also wheelchair accessible. From Victoria Park you can also drive up the Summit Road to the Sign of the Kiwi, and all along the summit of the Port Hills. There are numerous places where you can stop and enjoy the scenery.
