A lovely place just around the corner from Christchurch. Few city bus stops are worth spending half a day here. A walk along the beach, from visiting the cave cave rock to the shag rock, with views of the entire bay, are an experience to do if you are around Christchurch.

After speaking to some local folk in Christchurch City Centre, we asked “If you had a day off tomorrow (Saturday) what would you do and where would you go?
Three out of three said Sumner Beach to see the Rock Cave and have a pint in Beach. A pub on the beach.
They were right. A twenty minute bus ride on the Purple line metro bus - all day metro ticket - as many trips as you can fit in is $10NZ. (£5) The esplanade goes on forever and we had a lovely walk. Flat, hazard free and clean. Bus stops are plenty and clearly marked. We teamed it with Lyttelton farmers market. Great day out for very little cost if you are on a budget.
Highly recommend

My favorite beach in Christchurch. Sunsets are so beautiful here...I love to come here during the day as well, because there is less people but on the weekend it can get pretty busy. I love that you always can find dogs running around. Also few places around where you can get food and drings.

Monday afternoon and a sunny day albeit a bit of a cool breeze blowing. Plenty of parking about today in one of several carparks, although the surf club was closed as the beaches weren't lovely busy and 15 or 20 surfers about. Easy walking along the footpath and boardwalk to Scarborough Fare which had quite a few patrons. An ice cream from the shop was a good option for us for the return trip. Cave Rock had a few visitors when we walked past with the ride being pretty low.

Sumner Beach
Probably the nicest beach in Christchurch.

Just not great if there is an Easterly wind as then really cold.

The beach itself is quite long and wide at low tide. The sand is nice and quite often really clean.

It is a bit of a surf beach at time and operates Surf Life Saving flags in the season as can be quite rough.

There is a lovely esplanade footpath for people to enjoy the seaside stroll on.

Sumner beach has a restaurant right over the sand, an ice cream shop and café close by to enjoy.

Lots of parking street side, but it does fill up on sunny warm days.

Worth the trip for some sea breeze and pretty ocean views.

Large black sand beach. Plenty of sand space to enjoy. We spent a few hours here on a bright sunny day. Got busy as the morning wore on. Lifeguards and flags for safe swimming but be warned - they did not get set up until 10am. No point getting there early. Limited car parks in the area.

Large roomy beach with lots of debris on the shoreline tree branches etc. watch out for broken shells when walking with kids. Cave at the end is interesting. Did not like the amount of debris on the beach, especially not being able to see the debris in the water. Relaxing way to spend time, and there is huge amounts of room for kids to play. Beach seems safe, no rips, not sure if they have lifeguards during peak times. Parking and roads would be a problem during peak times.

Easy to get to by bus or car the beach is just lovely and takes you back in time. There is a lovely big rock you can walk through on low tide which is amazing. Quant shops nearby and a fun place to visit

Even though Sumner is part of Christchurch, we cycled there the wind in our face. Great cycle path.
Once you're there, there's lots of shops, bakeries and cafes, and a library/community centre.
I suggest to go on a weekday.
The sand was so hot, you quickly want to jump into the water.
There's lifeguards.

Such a delightful place- definitely one of my ‘go to’ places when visiting CHCH. How lovely to see what an exciting children’s play area has been developed in the last two years. What a beautiful beach - I could spend hours here.
