Learn to Surf in Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand. Your instructor Aaron Lock is one of New Zealand's most experienced Surfing and Bodyboarding instructors. We offer lessons and coaching to all abilities of surfer and bodyboarder from Beginner to Advanced / Elite riders. The basic Learn to Surf package is a two hour lesson designed to teach you the fundamentals of wave riding in the shortest time so you can spend less time 'kooking' it and more time 'ripping'.Most lessons are held at Scarborough Beach in Sumner . Scarborough provides a gentle peeling waves ideal for beginner and malibu riders.

Very well organised and well equipped surf school. Owner has real sea water in his blood. Competent staff who demystify surfing into simple instructions. You'll be standing up on the board during the first lesson. Children friendly with soft topped boards. Cater for the expert as well.

Very well run learn to surf lessons. My kids had a great time and used the equipment for the full 2 hours after the lesson. Kids were able to stand early on in the 2 hour lesson. This was the highlight of our month long trip to NZ and they want to come back for more surfing. Thanks Aaron and team!!

We have never surfed before and have booked private lessons on Learn to surf.
Our instructor Tobe could not have done his job better!
we had a lot of fun and could ride the first waves after the first 2 hours.
next time we are in christchurch we will definitely make a stop at the guys from learn to surf.

best surf instructors on the planet have to go there when you visit Christchurch one in a lifetime experience at the greatest beach sumner

My 12 year old son has had lessons in NZ, Australia and Hawaii. According to him Learn to Surf is the best of the best. One of the main differences is they teach you about the water. Thankfully my son was already aware of this but even with 4 lessons he was asked what he saw going on in the water and I saw this with every group. His instructor Eliza was friendly and extremely helpful. We would recommend to anyone wanting to get in the water. Thanks to you all.

Awesome thanks for your feedback and great review ,Yes we feel that learning about the ocean and how to read the waves is just as important as surf technique, we're always learning and the waves are always changing, thats one of the reasons surfing is so fun. Hope to see him out shredding the waves again soon. P.S. His instructors name was Alethea (Leathie for short)

I would highly recommend booking a lesson with Aaron and the Learn to Surf team. Unfortunately I can not remember our surf instructors name but she was great! Really positive and very informative.
It was so east to set up the lesson with Aaron out of season (being winter/spring) Aaron was very quick to reply and helpful when suggesting the best time for us to surf.

This was my first time ever attempting to surf and a receive lesson. The instructor was very helpful and professional! Learned a lot about basics and was able to get a feel for them! At the end of the lesson I was impressed with my abilities after a short amount of time! I'm overall very pleased and would suggest to everyone!

Aaron was a great teacher he helped me and after less than an hour i was up and away ;) ;) ;) i personally thing Aaron was a great teacher (that was a compliment :). )

I highly recommend Aaron Lock and his team especially Seb who got me riding with the waves within the first hour and is a great surfcoach.
Everything worked out easily and board and suit where provided also onthe next day for my own practice. Pricing is moderate and worth the money.
they also teach school classes and one teacher spoke very positively about the way they do it.

Those guys have a van by Sumner Beach and they rent wetsuits and boards. I just rented and didn't do the lessons. The $30 combo for board and suit for 3 hrs is great value and there are plenty of facilities in the Beach to shower and get changed. On top of it Sumner is such a great surfing beach with very rideable waves.
